You pegged it, Jeff; the desire to make a difference -- to do something meaningful -- has haunted me for as long as I can remember. I used to think that only cancer research or social work or similar worthy aspirations could effect real change in the world.

It's taken a long time, but I've finally realized that it's the small things people do, that make a difference in my life. And I can do small things. Helen Keller says it better:
I long to accomplish a great and noble task, but it is my chief duty to accomplish small tasks as if they were great and noble. - Helen Keller
Thanks for the post, Jeff. I'm off to do small things.

Wow Robin. Thanks for the comment and Helen Keller quote. That one is amazing. I agree, it is the small things that we do in life, consistently and unwaveringly, that make all the difference.

Well stated. Thanks for your feedback.

Jeff, nice blog post. Made me stop and think. Not sure why, but after reading it the saying came to mind "You can give a man a fish, and he will eat for a day. You teach a man to fish, and he will eat for a lifetime". Teaching is the difference...

Tom, Thanks for your comments. I love the "fishing" quote, too. My brother, who is a teacher in Maryland, has a tagline, "When one person teaches, two learn."

Coincidentally I have been thinking about the same thing Jeff. It is true , it is in the small things that you can make a difference and be remembered.
And the Ralph Emerson quote you brought up was good.
Hoping you do really make a difference in everyone's life who you come across.

Thanks for your comments. I'm glad it resonated with you.
I'll let the people that I interact with be the judge of whether it has been a favorable impression. I know I will always do my best.
Thanks again for the recommendation and comments.

Jeff, this is the second time I've found myself on your blog post. I had the opportunity to work on a United Way effort a few years ago and have found these words to be very inspiring...
Give, Advocate, Volunteer - LIVE
Just getting out there and doing something, anything is better than nothing, to promote a cause you care about is key. As Robin notes, it's more often the small and every day acts we do that can make the biggest difference.
