One area that discussed was XML where I mentioned that Mark Logic was a good solution for pure XML storage. A member of the audience said they did a POC shoot out between IBM and Mark Logic and decided to go with Mark Logic as they performed extremely well over the support of XML in DB2.
One particular audience asked each DBMS panelist to recommend to him a data modeling tool. I mentioned PowerDesigner having once been an tech executive at Sybase and participated in the acquisition of SDP Technologies while at Powersoft. It is a terrific data modeling tool that has deep features. Zach Urlocker agreed with me.
Overall the panel was professional. One little jab I gave was about how long commercial products take to deliver new releases to the market whereas open source DBMSs were released in much smaller timeframes with new capabilities that are aligned with customer requirements.
