ComputerWorld article on industry standards, SOA, and compliance
Here's a good article from ComputerWorld ("Industry Standards Can Help Pave the Road to Compliance") that nicely brings together SOA, compliance, and the importance of industry-specific standards. You know, it's nice to talk in lofty, general terms about SOA, but at some point you really have to get to the level of what information is being conveyed and what process it is a part of. That's where industry-specific standards come in and where a tremendous amount of the action is going to be in the next few years. Most industries have a good head start on standardization and have made the turn from EDI-to-XML to "what can we do now that we were never able to do before." Also, the interplays between industries like automotive and electronics as well as retail and consumer packaged goods will drive new standards and more consistent ones. This is one reason why we in IBM now longer talk about "vertical industries": there is too much cross-communication required to claim any industry can live in a silo.
