CNET has a fascinating article on an emerging market where real money is used to purchase virtual resources in virtual environments like video games.
So it's now possible for someone to support their physical needs (food, water, clothing, shelter) by working in a purely virtual environment. At what point will people be able to have their virtual environments take care of their physical needs as well?
It's an interesting hypothetical question that many works of science fiction have dealt with and which The Matrix popularized: If you had the choice to either live in a virtual environment where you could lead a spectacular lifestyle (e.g. a king, a president, a rock star, Grady Booch, or some other type of supernatural being) or to live in the real world where you're just an "ordinary" person, which would you choose?
One step closer to The Matrix
