A ctually, this is a very simple question: "why buy expensive storage, if it is possible to achieve the same with a much cheaper storage?"
This sounds very reasonable, but often it is just difficult to implement. Let´s have a closer look on a typical top level target system for storage planning:

I really like the idea of having a turbo option on the Storwize V3700, to quickly solve performance restrictions.
But I also learned that many performance issues cannot be solved with only adding more performance power to the system. When you do so then it might happen that you see some improvements but you will be in the same situation again after some time.

Use Case Target
A 40 TB mail system has to be moved from an oversized 10k, 300GB storage to a
new storage environment with lower cost 7.2k, 1TB disk drives and Raid 6. The
question is how many disks are needed in the new 7.2k disk arrays to deliver
the same performance as before.
