I would like to collect and share information about BVQ Business Volume Qualisicion in this blog. BVQ has been developed by SVA since 2008 to improve storage efficiency and lower storage costs in SVC environments. Everybody knows that SVC is a great product – it works and delivers! But nobody knows whether SVC is running in an optimal way. I like to compare the situation of SVC administrators with being forced to always be in motion in a dark room. Rule 1 – MOVE IN ANY POSSIBLE DIRECTION DON’T STAND! Rule 2- NEVER TOUCH A WALL! Understandably... [More]
uploaded a new file to developer works. This was part of a so called performance
workshop we did for one of our customers. (If you are interested in BVQ or need help for an analysis with BVQ then please send a note to firstname.lastname@example.org We offer this product or service around this product world wide) File: Foil Set for this blog entry
One of the
questions was about the performance of the underlying storage infrastructure.
In this case it was a DS5300 with plenty of 15k drives. So a plenty of performance

we now have a new WIKI where we collect technical informations
about BVQ and SVC / Storwize V7000 performance management and Bottleck
Analysis. the http address of the blog entry before is wrong - please use this one. http://bvqwiki.sva.de

A 40 TB mail system has to be moved from an oversized 10k, 300GB storage to a
new storage environment with lower cost 7.2k, 1TB disk drives and Raid 6. The
question is how many disks are needed in the new 7.2k disk arrays to deliver
the same performance as before.
With BVQ we are
able to analyze the aggregated performance values of all Volumes, which make up
the mail system. find more here: http://bvqwiki.sva.de/x/BYA6 pdf whitepaper download
I will be at the Pulse in Las Vegas to learn about all the IBM news and I want to use the free time there to meet Business Partners or customers with the interest in SVC or Storwize V7000, Storwize V3700 Monitoring. Please call me up, when you are interested to talk about BVQ. Either selling BVQ in your country or starting with a BVQ test installation in your own storage environment. I will be in Las Vegas from February 26 until March 6 Michael.Pirker@sva.de +49 151 180 25 26 0
BVQ Use Case: Performance Bottleneck Analysis on IBM SVC and IBM Storwize
Latency peaks, even if they are intermittent are dangerous troublemakers and you need targeted methods to track them down and to prevent them.
This White Paper presents such methods for the IBM System Storage SAN Volume Controller (SVC), or IBM Storwize V7000 which also uses SVC code.
As an analytical tool BVQ (Qualicision Business Volume) is used because it is very interactive and can evaluate the metrics provided by SVC very completely.
I have added a great movie that shows how we check a SVC or Storwize V7000, Storwize V3700 Storage for CPU or Global Caches overload.
With BVQ you only need seconds to find out whether the storage is overloaded or not.
This video shows how to do this.

This is from a customer situation
in the week from September 17, 2012 severe performance issues have been detected on several hosts in the VMware Farm.
A first analysis showed that one of the responsible discs has been ESX_D37.
The problem was especially high on Monday from 10 AM to 1 PM.
We want to analyze the situation on Monday to find out with the problem was coming from
This Analysis will cover the following
look into the performance of a volume - very simple - only volume IOPS and volume response times... [More]
Here you can find a collection of pages with technical tips and tricks regarding the management of an IBM SVC based environment.
BVQ and SVC and Storwize are very closely related. For this reason we also store some SVC informations and Tips and Tricks

I have added some videos that show how to use BVQ to analyze SVC or Storwize systems. These videos
are not reworked - they are from a session, where we used a screen cam
and a microphone and recorded what we were doing. But they show very well how to use BVQ to monitor and analyze SVC or Storwize systems some sort of live feeling ... http://bvqwiki.sva.de/x/2YE6
This white paper is an excerpt of a customer analysis. The
customer wanted to know about the optimal strategy for future capacity
growth. He was running out of disk space in his high performance class
and needed a quick solution here. He also wanted to replace all his old
DS4700 systems and again the question is to solve, where to put this
data. A good way to approach this is a BVQ Storage Tier
Analysis because this perfectly shows which kind of performance demands
the customer has. The Storage Tier Analysis can be used to find... [More]
Answer: it depends - this is not the correct answer!!!
Correct Answer: minus one second!
Fast way to from a VMware performance issue to a find the SVC or Storwize vDisk to analyze the root cause of the performance problem
