I am excited about the opportunity to speak at the Rational Innovate conference during the "Mobile User Interface Development Challenges and Trade-offs" session on Wed 10am. We will talk about some of the key tradeoffs, such as whether to go fully native for each mobile platform, use HTML5 to deliver a cross-platform solution, or use a combination of native and HTML5.
I will be sharing the podium with Alexander Muse, CEO of ShopSavvy software. Alex will provide a customer perspective of the tradeoffs and challenges in creating an industry leading mobile application that works well across several different mobile platforms, and explain how his company addressed the challenges and tradeoffs.
In my part of the session, I will outline how far we are today with HTML5 cross-platform development, particularly in light of the recently announced IBM Mobile Foundation platform. Then I will introduce and demonstrate an emerging new technology, Maqetta, an open source project led by IBM at http://Maqetta.org.
Maqetta is an application visualization tool for non-programmers and lightweight programmers. With Maqetta, users can create multi-screen desktop and mobile user interfaces via drag/drop assembly. Maqetta includes visual CSS theme editors for both desktop and mobile that allows users to customize the styling of a widget set to match corporate branding standards. It includes a web-based review/commenting feature that allows reviewers to actually run the application within a mobile simulator and add review comments onto the actual running application.
