Good discussion in Technewsworld on adoption of Linux based Netbooks (32%), the predicted surge in 2010 with ARM based Netbooks which will run ONLY Linux...
'Death of the Desktop'
However, "experience with netbooks will kill off the desktop within a few years," Pogson predicted. "It makes little sense unless you need all those drives, noise, heat, space and burning money. Those who really need power will use a thin client connected to a server cluster."
Looking ahead, "expect GNU/Linux to do just as well on notebooks as it did on netbooks," he added. "2009 was the year of GNU/Linux on the desktop as far as I am concerned. 2010 could well mark the death of the desktop and overweight notebooks."

This Wall Street Journal article says it all, almost all:
Big week for Smartbook vendors... running Android, Ubuntu, etc.. at the Las Vegas Consumer Electronics Show
Lower price, higher profit margin for vendors...
NO Windows, NO Office,
YES Linux, YES Lotus Symphony, ...
Why almost all?
What they missed is that about 32% of Netbooks are also shipping with Linux...

Windows 7 sparklers?
Oh well... Check it out. No surprises but good facts on why you want to consider alternatives to Windows 7...
And security holes?
"UAC was neutered too much by Microsoft," argued Chester Wisniewski, a senior security advisory with Sophos, talking about Windows' Users Account Control (UAC), the security feature Microsoft debuted with Vista.
How about Office 2010?
Infoworld says: Clunky, Slow!! and obviously expensive...
So why not IBM Client for Smart Work? http://www.ibm.com/lotus/openclient
Great writeup on the latest Dell mini 10 netbook on Ubuntu:
"Microsoft has restricted Windows 7 Starter to make sure it's no competition for the more full-featured versions of Windows 7. "

"Essentially, desktop Linux makes sense as the desktop OS only for thoseemployees who do common work in Office and Web apps. But that's a lotof people."
"OpenOffice is a sound alternative to Microsoft Office, but I spent most of my time with the free IBM Lotus Symphony, which is a slightly better productivity suite than OpenOffice, in the InfoWorld Test Center's evaluation."
"many companies, government agencies, and educational institutions canchuck at least some of them. Those based on XP -- or Windows 2000,which still has a huge installed base in government agencies -- canlook to big savings on licensing, hardware, and training costs."

More proof points on working smarter using Microsoft alternatives...
Freeform Dynamics reported based on input from 1275 survey responders worldwide that (a) cost reduction and security are major drivers, (b) ubuntu scored high, (c) after IT the low hanging fruit were General professional users (relatively light and predictable use of e-mail, office tools, etc) andTransaction workers (mostly using enterprise applications in a routine prescriptive manner) http://www-03.ibm.com/press/us/en/pressrelease/27562.wss

"Our strategy is to focus on Linux first and foremost, taking a practical and pragmatic approach," said Gianluca Giovannetti, CIO and Director of Organization, Gruppo Amadori. "For us, the Linux environment is the right choice for very focused applications and is more cost effective than Microsoft."

"Under the Open Source, Open Standards and Re–Use: Government Action Plan the UK government will specify requirements by reference to open standards and require compliance with open standards in solutions where feasible.1 The government indicated it will support the use of ODF. It will also work to ensure that government information is available in open formats, and it will make this a required standard for government websites."
Seventeen national and eight provincial governments around the world have now officially endorsed ODF for document exchange.
More adoption trends...

"For software programmers and developers worried about layoffs and jobsecurity in these tough economic times, the answer may be as clear asthe screen on your cell phone. That’s because manufacturers of smallconsumer equipment like cell phones and PDAs need programmers trainedin embedded Linux to hand-tune the product’s software code."
And then if you look at the hot jobs in 2009, there is a good intersection of roles that can benefit from such capabilities:
