which will enable the bank to communicate more effectively on-line,
will eventually be used by 300,000 bank employees, more than three
times the number who currently have access to e-mail. It will allow
them to better exchange information through Web 2.0-enabled instant

I like the guidance. So dear customer. Don't upgrade now. Keep paying every year on the Microsoft Enterprise Agreement. And when 2010 comes, hopefully in 2010, then spend lot more money again, and hopefully upgrade...
Yet another reason for Customers to NOT renew Microsoft Enterprise Agreement and consider Microsoft alternatives.
According to Michael Sampson's blog (http://www.michaelsampson.net/2007/07/mark-bennett-on.html ) a Lotus Notes 5 customer in New Zealand is planning a roll-out of Notes 8. "All of the Domino Servers run on Linux, and they are considering the roll-out of some Linux desktops. In terms of Notes 8, Mark says, "What exactly do our people need beyond Notes 8, the inbuilt productivity editors, and a browser?" In other words, Notes 8 paves the way for a move away from both a Windows desktop and Microsoft Office."

1. Given the fact that next version of Domino will run on the same hardware and operating system as the current version, what is meant by re-platforming? The same is not correct for Microsoft Exchange 2007, correct?

So what? Well, lets look at customers in Retail and Manufacturing industries. According to the Datamonitor aticle above, AMR, estimates only 29% of the SAP customers they surveyed have the prerequisite technology in place.

"Corporate users who migrate to Exchange 2007 (yes, no upgrades!) will face mandatory infrastructure changes that, while advancing security and management could add complexity and costs to their networks"!
According to the article, you will need to deal with the following:
- Requires 64bit processors - so you have to buy new hardware.
- The new role based architecture may require upto 5 exchange servers to support remote client access, transport/routing, unified messaging, and mailboxes.
- New clustering limitations - move from server consolidation thought to server expansion, given the increase in # of servers required.
- Eliminate all Exchange 5.5 servers from the environment!
- No in place upgrades from Exchange 2000/2003 to 2007.
- Exchange no longer will have its own site topology.
- Integrate Exchange with a PBX - specs not available yet.
- Need compatibility kits for third party 32bit plugins that may not run on Exchange 2007
I expect Microsoft will soon release the following:
- detailed migration and best practice guidelines for users
- public beta of Exchange in July 2006
- licensing options requirements for Exchange 2007
So, why wait?
Move to Domino or DAMO (for Outlook fans), run it on Linux, to help save some money so you can invest it in other mission critical initiatives!

So the IBM vision and strategy, and product roadmap is clear. There are no forced upgrades. Each release is planned to further improve the TCO, and augment capabilities based on customer requirements.
