Check out this great application of technology to address real issues in developing countries - this one in Tanzania, Africa:
The concept of using text messaging to improve stock management of life-saving medicines was developed by pharmaceutical company Novartis and a team of international students taking part in IBM's internship program, Extreme Blue.
After visits to clinics, hospitals and dispensaries across Tanzania, IBM, Novartis and Vodafone initiated a five-month pilot of the SMS for Life solution, covering 135 villages and over a million people in different geographic locations across Tanzania.
Bill from Wall Street Journal writes about the IBM Client for Smart Work for African countries:
International Business Machines Corp. will try to sell a new package of low-priced computer desktop applications to companies and governments in Africa, challenging Microsoft Corp. and other rivals in the region.
The African market for information technology is relatively small, but unlike Europe and the U.S., it is growing even in the recession. Market researcher IDC predicts it will rise 2.3% this year to $22.1 billion.
