Check out this quote:
"The critical issue for Google is to segment commercial Gmail traffic from consumer traffic. Google must prove that consumer and commercial services are largely independent of each other, and that the commercial services will sustain at least a 99.9 percent uptime, which is the standard for most commercial e-mail SaaS (software-as-a-service) services."
Matthew Cain, Gartner, InfoWorld, "Update: Gmail Suffers Widespread Outage," September 01, 2009
For those who havent seen the news on this outage:
"Google Inc's efforts to persuade businesses to buy its email services
suffered a setback this week after a highly publicized outage shut down
accounts of millions of corporate customers for almost two hours."

"Microsoft has traditionally not embraced the concept of VDI. For the longest time it was actually a technical violation of the Windows desktop license agreement to use Windows for VDI. Then when Microsoft finally changed that policy, they did so by creating a license called "VECD" (for Vista Enterprise Centralized Desktop) which is a new license that's required in addition to your Vista Enterprise license. .. Oh yeah, VECD is only available if you have Software Assurance. ..
Microsoft created a new license bundle called the "Microsoft Virtual Desktop Infrastructure Suite," which, like most Microsoft products, is available in multiple editions. This suite is not a new product, but rather a hodge-podge bundle of most of the different things you'll need to start using Microsoft's VDI platform. ... The problem is that the "suite" is just a sort of random collection of various products that aren't really related. ..."
The Microsoft VDI Suite starts at $21 per user, per year.,

a Project Liberate proof point: Directions on Microsoft analyst says customers are not renewing Microsoft Enterprise Agreements
Check this out:
A new report by Directions on Microsoft analysts Paul DeGroot and Rob Horwitz called "5 Reasons Why Microsoft Licensing Is Hard" claims that Microsoft licensing isn't likely to get any easier any time soon..."
Microsoft doesn't think there's a problem," report co-writer DeGroot said in an interview Wednesday. "The money keeps rolling in ... Microsoft looks at the numbers and the reality is that most customers don't have a choice."
And despite Microsoft's rosy view of things, he said that some enterprise customers have chosen not to renew their contracts this year because "the customer doesn't understand the value of what they bought or how they bought it," DeGroot said."

Upgrade from Windows XP to 7 64bit? No. Think twice.
Migrate from Windows XP to 7 64bit? Well that is the right thinking, but lots of issues...
- Sure, you have to reinstall all applications, save data externally and then copy back after installing the OS
- Watch out for missing device drivers
- Watch out for application incompatibility
- Not just that it is not available/wont work in Windows 7 but it doesnt support 64bit hardware

Interesting analysis by Applicable in UK, modelled for 500-4000 users:
Cost of adding advanced collaboration capabilities: compare between IBM and Microsoft:
- IBM Solutions are up to 37% cheaper based on Infrastructure costs and subsequent user support costs.
- When licensing costs are introduced, particularly those of Microsoft Office – this saving is more pronounced.

US Bank, is getting their 58,000 users upgrade to the latest Lotus Notes Domino 8.5. Moreover, this bank, who had more than 5000 siloed Sharepoint sites, is adopting Lotus Quickr and Lotus Connections software in addition to Lotus Sametime that is already in use. Working smarter together...
See details here: http://www-03.ibm.com/press/us/en/pressrelease/28400.wss
"Our industry has undergone unprecedented changes over the last year, and that serves as great example of why it's so important for U.S. Bank's employees to be able to use technology to communicate and collaborate efficiently," said Mark Dickelman, senior vice president, innovation, research and development for U.S. Bank. "Keeping up with economic developments and policy changes and the need to quickly communicate while innovating for growth would be nearly impossible with traditional methods, and that's why Lotus collaboration software will continue to be incredibly useful to us, especially as we continue to solidify our company's position as a leader in the financial services industry."
Makes lots of sense, given the recent TCO math (see my previous blog entries) that shows a reduction in TCO by more than 37% if you adopt IBM Lotus collaboration software rather than Microsoft sharepoint, and office communications server.
