Is working smarter mean being more productive? more effective?
Obviously two very loaded words. Been used thru out the history of IT and Business...
Here is a 2006 HBR article by Stever Robbins that gets into some of this:
"Working smart is risky. If you work smart, you'll have more free time.That means more leisure, shorter work hours, or . . . more work. If youuse the free time to take on more commitments, you're just as busy asbefore, but now you are so tightly scheduled that a slip in one projectcan cascade to many more projects. Happiness happens when productivityenables a higher-quality life, not frantic overachievement"
"To work faster, you'll have to get into the zone"
"Key to entering the zone is eliminating distraction"
"Your biggest distractions will come from you, though. You'll multitask"
"Another way to work smarter is by distinguishing busy from productive"
"The 80/20 rule says that 80 percent of your results come from just 20 percent of your efforts"

Great story of several customers in Singapore adoption IBM technologies for Smarter Collaboration:
"After running a proof of concept in 2007 of possible systems, theschool decided to build its portal with IBM WebSphere and Quickrproducts. It tied six different backend systems, including a studentadministration system running on PeopleSoft software, Blackboard forits course management system and Microsoft Windows Live for e-mail, hesaid.
The school is currently running a pilot trial of 3,000students, and is in the midst of procuring new servers for the finalroll out, which would affect some 13,000 students come February 2010"

IBM and MIT recently conducted an analysis of social networks inside IBM to figure out productivity metrics associated with social capital in general and interaction between an employee and their manager in particularOut of several thousand consultants inside IBM, those withstrong virtual links to a manager produced an average of $588 ofrevenue per month over the norm.
The research also found that the average email contact was worth $948 in revenue.
