I understand that the take up of Systems Director in the AIX world hasn't been that strong. Many people have had bad experiences, especailly with earlier versions and learning to navigate the Director interface. Perhaps it's time to make a fresh start with the latest version. If the IBM SDMC is going to provide the functionality of both the HMC and IVM, along with the many other Systems Director management and monitoring functions, it seems to me it's worth learning. It might even make your life easier.
If you've got experience with the HMC, IVM or Systems Director already, you're several steps ahead of the game for the forthcoming SDMC. But there is a lot to learn, including some new terminology to provide some consistency across platforms. (I think it's worthwhile updating terminology sometimes. It still strikes me as odd that NIM refers to its clients as "machines" when often these days they are virtual servers sitting on the one physical "machine".).
The SDMC Redbook
Here's an extract from the Redbook IBM Systems Director Management Console: Introduction and Overview. It discusses some of the new terminology we'll be seeing:
Based on the integration into IBM Systems Director, a common terminology replaces the Hardware Management Console and Integrated Virtualization Manger specific terminology. Table 1-4 shows a mapping of terminology used on the Hardware Management Console versus the terminology used in the SDMC. Terminology might change slowly, so you might see and hear old terminology mixed with new terminology for a period of time.
You can find IBM Systems Director downloads and documentation here.
And Nigel Griffiths, an IBM Systems Director enthusiast, has written some Hints and Tips for Systems Director for AIX, Part 1, (and Part 2). He has also produced some very helpful movies on how to implement Director.
