Tivoli Usage and Accounting Manager (TUAM) development are pleased to announce the release of the IBM® Tivoli® Service Automation Manager (TSAM) - Extension for Usage and Accounting v1.0.
This TSAM extension delivers cloud cost management capability by enhancing the integration, reporting and services between TUAM and TSAM. The extension allows cloud users to view historical invoice reports that show the charges associated with each project.
The Usage and Accounting v1.0 extension provides the following features:
- Easier Cloud Usage Report Access - Enabling Cloud users to access and view historical Usage and Accounting Manager Cognos reports directly from TSAM. Single sign on is configured between the two systems to allow for easier report access.
- Role-based Report Security - Security access can now be configured to ensure that users that belong to the TSAM Cloud security groups can only access the TUAM Cognos reports that they are assigned to. For example, users that belong to the Cloud Customer and Cloud Team administrator user groups in TSAM can now be assigned access to specific TUAM Cognos reports.
- Account Code Report Security - Account code security is used for customer and team reporting data segregation based on cloud roles in TSAM. This is achieved by data synchronization between TSAM and TUAM which involves aligning TSAM entities such as customers, teams, security groups and users with TUAM entities such as clients, users and user groups. After the synchronization process has completed, account code security is applied to the reports that TSAM users access.

Pay as you go is one of the characteristics
of cloud computing service. To provide such a service we need to track the usage
data for each cloud offering. For example, in an IaaS cloud platform, the usage
data is normally the CPU, Memory, Disk, Network. For a SaaS cloud offering
like Maximo as a Service (MaaS), the usage data required to charge the cloud
offering consumer may be the business usage data, such as:
- how many assets are
managed in the cloud for how many days,
- how many service requests or work orders
Tivoli Usage and Accounting Manager (TUAM) is well-known
for its IT usage metering and chargeback capability. However,
TUAM can also be used to track the business usage data. This blog entry will
describe this TUAM solution designed for MaaS.
In this TUAM solution, the following steps
- A Maximo daily crontask is developed
and set up to retrieve the usage data from Maximo DB and to create a CSR file
with the business usage data.
- A Maximo virtual machine OS daily
crontask is set up to transfer the CSR file to the TUAM server.
- A TUAM daily job plan is set up to
process the CSR files based on the accounting information set up in the TUAM
- The existing TUAM invoice reports are leveraged to provide new reports to showback the billing information.
The following paragraphs describe
the details of each of the above steps.
In step 1, we developed
MaaSMeteringCronTask.java to collect usage metering data, and to output into a CSR file based on the format required by TUAM. The sample usage data
includes: how many assets has the status <> "DECOMMISSIONED",
how many work orders were closed in previous day, how many service requests were
opened in previous day. The usage data is recorded for each account. The
account information is composed of Tenant Company ID + Maximo Instance Name +
Maximo VM Hostname. This data is fed into the CSR file. Here is the sample CSR file:
In step 2, the CSR files will be
transferred to TUAM server for processing. In Maximo VM, we configured one Linux cron task to transfer the
In step 3, the usage data in CSR files are
processed by TUAM server. In order to do this, we first need to set up the TUAM
server including account code structure, rate group,
rate codes and job file.
The most important configuration in TUAM server for a usage based metering solution
is to develop one job XML file and configure it to run. You can find
the sample job xml file in the TUAM server you installed. In the job xml file
for MaaS, we defined the Job with ID “MaaS”, this job has one process with 5
Scan – this step scans the CSR
files with the date as a part of their name, and merges them into CurrentCSR.txt
– this step adds the account code information into the usage data record by
combining the value from TenantID, Hostname, Maxinstance with the defined
length. The output data is in file AcctCSR.txt
Process – this step is a normal
TUAM step to process the usage data to generate files Ident.txt,
BillSummary.txt and BillDetail.txt.
DatabaseLoad – this step is a
normal TUAM step to load the data from above 3 files into the database.
Cleanup – this step is to
cleanup the old CSR files. You can turn off this step if you do not want to
clean the CSR files.
In step 4, we used the out of box TUAM
invoice report to review or showback the usage based metering and billing report for MaaS.
You could develop any new reporting based on your requirements using the Cognos
reporting embedded in TUAM.
After releasing Tivoli Service Automation Manager 7.2.2 in July with a great deal of new capabilities to cover customer use cases, now IBM Service Delivery Manager 7.2.2 is available.
In addition to leveraging Tivoli Service Automation Manager V7.2.2, it
- Adds new monitoring capabilities of the virtualized infrastructure
through Tivoli Monitoring
for Virtual Servers V6.2.3
- Provides enhanced metering and accounting capabilities, leveraging Tivoli Usage and Accounting Manager
- Is delivered as a set of virtual machines for simplified deployment

Would you like to expand your TUAM Cognos reporting experience?
The TUAM team are pleased to announce the delivery of 10 new Cognos reports, that enhance TUAM Cognos reporting in the following ways:
- Graphs and Pie charts have been introduced giving users an at-a-glance view of the current situation.
- Trend reports are now available, allowing users to view how those accounts accruing costs and how costs are being recovered by rate codes.
- New reporting functionality has been added that extend the existing report set by providing new reports which can be used as templates. These templates utilize the Cognos functionality (graphs / pie-charts) that have not been used previously in the TUAM Cognos reports.
Graphical reports are now available providing an immediate view of usage and cost recovery.
- The Top 10 Pie Chart gives you an insight into those accounts accruing the most costs for a period.
- See the trends in account and rate level costs over time, using the Cost Trend Graph report.
- Monitor the usage for each rate to understand how each resource is consumed and whether it allows for full cost recovery using the Usage Trend Report.
Trending reports allow users to get an insight into the trends in cost accrual and usage in order to monitor how the cost recovery process is progressing.
- At-a-glance see the costs being generated and how they are growing over time using the Cost Trend Graph Report.
- See the costs accrued for an account and understand how those costs are growing over time using the Cost Trend Report.
- Get detailed information on these cost trends over time by drilling down to into the rate group and rates they are using in the Cost Trend Report.
- Monitor those accounts generating the most costs using the Top 10 Cost Report.
- Understand the trend in usage over time using the Usage Trend report to aid capacity management.
- Use the Cost Trend by Rate report to increase your understanding of the rate group usage and drill down to understand those rates and account codes with the most resource usage.

Additional Crosstab reports are now available
that allow you to monitor costs and usage. You can now better
understand charges over time using the Monthly Crosstab report and gain a
better understanding at a high level of the usage and costs being
accrued using the Summary Crosstab reports. Template reports
these new reports to create your own reports. Use the Top 10 Pie Chart
as a template for other graphical reports to show the highest and lowest
consumers of resources and costs. Use the Trend Graph reports as
templates for reports showing lower level details of the trend in costs

I had great discussions at Impact 2014 on DevOps, SmartCloud Orchestrator, SoftLayer, BlueMix and so much more. One of the most common topics I was asked about was how SmartCloud Orchestrator relates to PureApplication System. SmartCloud Orchestrator shares common pattern technology with PureApplication System allowing the same pattern to be moved between environments, and it also provides orchestration capabilities that can be used directly with PureApplication to add significant capabilities to your cloud environments. These orchestration capabilities are built by purposing IBM Business Process Manager for your cloud orchestration needs.
Based on experience with PureApplication System customers, here are my top five reasons to consider adding SmartCloud Orchestrator:
Data center integration. In all likelihood, your PureApplication deployments are not self-contained on the rack. The orchestration engine within SmartCloud Orchestrator is perfect for adding external coordination to tie your patterns to external sources. For example, you can build a workflow within the orchestrator to deploy a pattern on PureApplication and after the deployment to open the corresponding ports in your firewall and update your CMDB. Orchestrator provides pre-built integrations for network, storage, change management, pattern deployment, etc that are readily adaptable for PureApplication System. The Process Designer within Orchestrator can be used to build any additional, custom integration into your data center.
Manual process integration. While your goal may be full automation, most customers I speak with still have some manual process steps, including approval processing. The Process Designer supports “human tasks” within the workflows so if necessary you can keep the peace by getting the security guys approval before opening that port.
Self-Service Offerings. If you want to offer a simplified or highly customized catalog to your PureApplication patterns, the SmartCloud Orchestration catalog provides this. The catalog links to your workflows, allowing you to control user experience. In addition, you can use the same catalog to launch services outside of PureApplication, such as storage as a service.
Cross rack orchestration. If you have multiple PureApplication racks, you can use Orchestrator to provide any additional cross rack coordination not built into PureApplication. For example, establishing a highly available application by deploying the application on two racks and integrating both deployments to the same load balancer.
Cross cloud orchestration. You may have workloads that are better fitted to run outside of PureApplication, in environment such as a PureApplication Services on SoftLayer or on KVM OpenStack. SmartCloud Orchestrator provides OpenStack and EC2 integration, and includes the same pattern deployment capabilities as PureApplication so you can share assets. The Self-Service offerings can broker deployments into either PureApplication or other on or off-premise clouds, with decision rules to choose the best fit for a particular request, and even move or burst to across clouds.

IBM® Tivoli® Service Automation
Manager (TSAM) has delivered yet another cloud extension that provides service
offerings for automating the provisioning of network attached storage (NAS)
with an NFS export name. The file systems can then be mounted into virtual
machines provisioned within TSAM Virtual Servers Projects. The
extension introduces the concept of Storage-only Project, which
allows managing the entire life-cycle of the file systems (create, expand, set
access, and destroy), in a secure multi-tenant environment. It works in
integration with IBM N series and NetApp FAS series
storage systems as sketched in the picture below.
Once you download the installation
package from the Integrated Service Management Library (http://www.ibm.com/software/ismlibrary?NavCode=1TW10TS0F) and install it on top of TSAM 7.2.2
platform, your cloud administrator can easily configure the Extension for
Network Attached Storage to provision NFS-mountable file systems. In fact, the
extension provides a plug-in to the Cloud Storage Pool Administration
TSAM application where she can enter the hostname of the workstation running the
OnCommand NetApp management software, and the credentials to
access it. Then the extension automatically discovers all the storage resources (NetApp
Datasets) from the underlying storage systems and makes them visible as
TSAM Storage Pools. At that point the cloud administrator can regulate
access to the storage resources using the TSAM way of associating storage pools
and quotas to customers,
and that’s it, the extension is configured. Now you can delegate to your
customers the management of storage up to the assigned quota: the customer
administrators can start requesting storage for their virtual servers by
creating storage projects and add, expand, and delete file systems. The entry
point for this is the Tivoli Self Service Station – Storage Management folder
(showed in the picture below).
the Create Storage Project offerings brings a simple user interface for
requesting file systems and assigning them to teams of users (see example pictures
The customer administrator has to
enter a prefix for the NFS export name, a TSAM Storage Pool from which to carve
the storage, and the size of the file system, that’s it. She can decide to
create many file systems with same characteristics by increasing the value of
the “Number” spin control. She can decide to make the file systems available to
all the teams of the customer by checking the “Access to All Teams” box: by
default the storage is only visible to the team of users that owns the storage
Note that once the storage project
has been created, the file systems cannot be mounted yet into virtual servers because
there is no ACL set on the IBM N series boxes for them. To do so, the customer
administrator creates TSAM Projects with Virtual Servers, and associates file
systems to the virtual machines belonging to the project: the extension
automatically updates the access control list (ACL) of the NFS export name
adding the IP address of the virtual machines. When the user logs in, she can
mount the file systems and use them (she gets the information of the NFS export
name with a notification e-mail).
In summary, the predefined functions
that you get with the TSAM Extension for NAS storage are:
Service offerings for managing the entire life-cycle (create, expand,
destroy, set access) of shared file systems accessible with the NFS protocol;
Service offering for authorizing virtual servers to mount storage;
Administrative graphical user interface for discovering NetApp Datasets
into TSAM Storage Pools and restricting usage by customer.
There are no predefined features to
create and manage NetApp Datasets neither vFilers to create customers silos.
For example, what if you want to automate the creation of a vFiler and of a
couple of storage pools – gold and silver, upon on-boarding of a new customer?
There are no predefined features to authorize
the shared file systems to anything but a virtual server within virtual servers’
project. What if you want to automatically attach a file system to a VMWare Cluster
as backend data store for VM images upon creation in a storage project?
Well, the TSAM Extension for NAS
storage provides low-level Tivoli Provisioning Manager (TPM) Workflows and
Tivoli Platform Automation engine (TPAe) Runbooks that can be used to implement
such automations in custom extensions that you can write based on best
practices described in the TSAM platform extensibility guide.

The Tivoli Usage and Accounting Manager
(TUAM) team is pleased to announce that the TUAM IBM Hardware
Management Console (HMC) collector also supports collecting usage
information from IBM Systems Director Management Console (SDMC) and facilitates analyzing, reporting, and billing based on the
usage and costs of this metering data. This provides a
means for enterprises to migrate from HMC to SDMC and ensure
continuity of showback/chargeback solutions based on TUAM. Future versions of the HMC/SDMC
collector will exploit SDMC specific features.
Capabilities of the collector include
- Ability to capture allocation (entitlements) and usage information for each LPAR, Processor Pool, Memory Pool and the overall System
- Ability to capture capped and uncapped usage and charge different amounts for each

IBM® Tivoli® Service Automation
Manager (TSAM) has delivered a new extension to configure
extra disks in addition to the boot disk when requesting virtual machines
within a Project with VMWare servers. Downloading the installation package from
the Integrated Service Management Library and installing it on top of TSAM 7.2.2
platform enables the cloud administrator to prepare and manage a multi-tenant, customer-segregated
environment for hosting the additional disks. In particular, the cloud
administrator can select the VMWare data stores that he wants to use for
additional disks grouping them in TSAM storage pools that can be then
associated with one or more customers (*), meaning that only those customers
can carve storage from the data stores. She can also limit the amount of
storage that each customer can use on a TSAM storage pool. Finally, the cloud
administrator can flag this type of TSAM storage pool to be thin provisioned.
Once the cloud administrator has
prepared the environment, then the users of the cloud can request virtual
machines equipped with extra disks – in addition to the boot disk, taken from
one of the TSAM storage pools they are authorized to. The extension
automatically formats and attaches the disks to the virtual machines, so when
the users log in they can start working.
The life-cycle of the extra disks is
tied to the life-cycle of the virtual machine to avoid any inconsistency of
data, which means that they are saved, restored, and deleted together with the
The Extension for Additional
Disk has some gaps that should be filled in one of next releases: the
users cannot expand extra disks and cannot modify the configuration of a
virtual machine to attach or detach extra disks.
(*) This article focuses on a public
cloud solution, where the service provider sells services to his customers. The cloud administrator is the administrator of the entire cloud platform.
A hotfix for Tivoli Service Automation Manager 7.2.2 that contains a fix to
a small but important installation issue as well as some enhancements for migrating from the previous version is now available on the IBM Support Portal.
IBM Tivoli Monitoring for Virtual Servers has reached the Beta stage for the next major release and we are seeking interested Beta participants.
Among the features currently under development, to be highlighted in the beta program, are proposed new dashboards highlighting advancements in analytics as well as policy-driven capacity planning.
ITM for Virtual Servers Beta drop 3 that includes capacity planner was successfully released to WW customers.
This beta drop includes simple 5 step process on PlanningCenter for capacity planning, resource demand generation based on time shift & percentile utilization, topology reports.
The previous beta drop was evaluated by key business partner Orb Data. The product received positive feedback. "We recently participated in the Beta program for Tivoli's upcoming ITM for Virtual Servers release. We liked what we saw with their new dashboard capabilities and particularly the new capacity analytics features. The backup solution utilizes Evault's Infostage line of product. Infostage is a full-automated server-to-agent, disk-to-disk backup technology. Some of the many features include compression, customizable encryption schemes, and Evault's delta technology. The backup agent can be managed from a downloadable desktop agent or through a webserver hosted in a SoftLayer data center. Backups can be completely customized on what to backup, how long to keep the data, when the backups run, and encryption schemes. All backups are done over SoftLayer's true out-of-band private network.
How EVault Backup works?
Evault Backup is an automated agent-based backup system that is managed through the Evault WebCC browser-based management utility, performs backups on full systems, targeted directories and individual files.
WebCC is short for WebCentralControl, a web-based tool that allows Evault users to interact with their Evault backups service on all levels.
How to order evault
Login https://control.softlayer.com/devices/, then find the cci instance you want to attach evault agent.
Choose “Storage”->”Other Storage”->”Evault”, the click add button, then select which datacenter you want to backup your data, you can choose local or remote data center to save you data.
3. TSM (Tivoli Storage Manager) backup for DB2
Softlayer don't provide db2 evault agent to backup db2 database, so we couldn’t backup online backup db2 database, so we need to install tsm agent to backup DB2 database.
Install TSM agent on each of IOC nodes
Upload tsm agent rpm to each of IOC node

Implement DB2 Deep Compression on softlayer cloud environment
The storage and network bandwidth usually is limited and charged in cloud environment, no traditional tap library was provided for backup, no dedicated network used for backup network, usually customer service and backup shared the same bandwidth, so storage and network bandwidth will be more treasurable.
DB2's Deep Compression beats out the competition and routinely saves in the order of 40-70% of the total space usage. That's very good savings for the cloud given that storage costs money. If you backup data to the cloud or a storage service, you will be paying by space usage. DB2 compressed backups are simple to use and will save money in storage costs.

From db2 v10, db2 also support archive log compressed, it's simple to enable compression for archive log.

4. DR solution on Softlayer
This section we will introduce how to design Disaster recovery solution for TSM, we will combined NAS storage and rsync to realize DR for our customer environment.
We assume that two customer environment was setup in different data center on Softlayer, for example, IOC environment 1 located at Dallas 5, IOC environment 2 located at London data center, we setup one TSM servers for each data center, as show below diagram 1

Below is the original case study created by the internal Tivoli IT team and outlines our journey to the cloud.
With over 40 sites worldwide, IBM® Tivoli® IT faced high capital, management, and administration costs, and less than optimal efficiency. Lack of a virtualized IT environment limited the organization’s ability to reuse and share IT resources and best practices. Predominantly manual request workflows, and capacity management and administration processes drove up management costs and resulted in average delivery times for new resource requests of weeks to months. Additionally, the organization’s physical resources were largely underutilized, with average utilization of 5-6 percent.
IBM Tivoli IT consulted with IBM cloud computing and systems technology experts to create a geographically dispersed and secure cloud that can be monitored and managed through centralized tooling. This approach is helping to reduce IT expenses, capital requirements, security administration, and setup and deployment time for resources. Through this initiative, the organization moved its existing servers into virtualization pools and deployed new virtual machines, consolidating the total number of worldwide labs from 12 infrastructure anchor sites. It then leveraged IBM Integrated Service Management solutions based on Tivoli software to automate end-user services, provide users with a catalog of available services to choose from, and efficiently monitor, manage and secure the environment.
This private cloud provides developers and testers with predictable, rapid access to securely reserve, provision and deploy development and test environments. It also gives them the ability to manage images that can be certified, stored, centralized and published. The central monitoring and management component maintains effective and efficient service delivery across the entire cloud. It monitors all of the resources, service requests, operating systems and energy usage. And it centralizes IT asset information so staff can define and implement detailed lifecycle workflows to track and manage assets from cradle to grave.
Information is collected and presented through customized dashboards. These dashboards allow administrators to track performance, availability, utilization and capacity of resources, and to proactively forecast and plan for future needs. For example, administrators can easily track the usage of resources based on the services requested and provide that information to development and test managers so they can adjust resource reservations to support their projects. With all asset information in a single application, staff can quickly search, identify and deploy inactive assets from a base of more than 30,000 virtual systems to meet a development need worldwide. When needed, capacity can be increased simply by “plugging in” a virtualized infrastructure anywhere in the world. Users are authenticated against IBM’s employee directory to quickly provide secure access to this private cloud.
In just 10 months, the team deployed a secure private cloud that enables the organization to get more use out of existing resources and avoid significant capital expense. So far, Tivoli IT has avoided more than $4.5 million in capital expenditures and saved more than $3 million in operational expenses with its move to cloud computing. Average server utilization has risen from 5 percent to as much as 60 percent. Additionally, the organization can provide increasingly better service to its users—delivering services more rapidly, consistently and with fewer errors. Average delivery times for new resources have been reduced from months and weeks to days and hours. This improved service enables developers and testers to complete higher quality work and deliver products to market faster. This results in increased competitiveness and higher revenue for the company. The organization anticipates management and administration costs will continue to decline as service delivery processes are increasingly automated and staff is redirected to work on high-value activities and innovation projects.

My three favorite things about OpenStack are

San Diego was my second OpenStack summit. Many of the same faces were in the design
summit sessions I attended, but there were many new faces as well. One of the most exciting observations from
the Folsom design summit was the incredible talent pool assembled. The Grizzly summit was no different – it’s
great to interact with so many incredibly smart, deep and experienced
people. I’m convinced that a single
company could never amass such a collection of quality talent for one
project. I guess it’s no wonder they’re
saying OpenStack is the fastest growing open source project ever.
I must apologize in advance, because I am sure to miss
someone, but I want to tell you about some of the people I interacted with in
the nova, glance, and cinder design sessions.
Over the past few months I’ve really been impressed with the PTL
leads. They’re very smart, highly
motivated, and excellent facilitators.
The design sessions invariably get into open debate, but productive
debate. I was impressed with the PTLs’
natural abilities to channel the discussion to bring out the key issues and
land on some concrete next steps.
I got to meet Microsoft’s Peter Pouliot, who’s heroic and
tenacious efforts successfully delivered HyperV support after a rather dodgey mess earlier in the year. Peter is not your stereotypical Microsoft
developer. He’s an open source guy
through and through. It’s clear that his
personal spirit had a lot to do with corralling the community to deliver
quality code in a very short time frame.
It was great to meet Peter and some of his non-Microsoft
colaborators. Great job guys!
I also had the pleasure to meet with some of VMware’s
developers and not just those acquired via the billion dollar Nicira
acquisition. The Nicira guys are great –
no question but I was also very pleased to meet the VMware developer who
completely rewrote the less than adequate VMware compute driver. I hope to work closely with them to ensure
the hypervisor is well supported and as interoperable as possible with other
properietary and open source technologies.
Of course, I can’t speak of OpenStackers without mentioning
RackSpace. Over the past two summits, I
got to interact with a number of RackSpace developers, aka Rackers. I got to hand it to them, they really do
have a great bunch of people and definitely
bring a massive scale service provider
perspective to the discussion. Of
course, being an IBMer myself, I can’t help but bring the enterprise customer
perspective into the mix. I think
OpenStack benefits greatly from these two perspectives brought together in open
OpenStack has done a great job defining an extensible
framework for IaaS. This flexibility not
only helps accommodate the varied needs from enterprise to service provider,
but it also enables a massive sea of innovation. Since the Nicira acquisition there’s been a
lot of attention on the innovation around software defined networking and
quantum, the OpenStack project that provides the abstraction for a variety of
implementations ranging from proprietary,
to pure open source like Open V Switch, to traditional standard
networking equipment. I think storage is
even hotter than networking these days with a slew of vendors combining
commodity 10Ge switches with commodity Intel servers with a combination of SSDs
and spinning disks to provide new approaches to storage for virtualized
environments. Of course software plays a
critical role in many of these virtualized storage solutions. Dreamhost’s open source distributed file system Ceph has been getting a lot of interest.
Enterprise storage vendors like NetApp, IBM, and HP have also
contributed cinder drivers to support their products within OpenStack
clouds. There were also a number of
summit discussions about exposing the different backend implementations of the
abstractions with different qualities of service. Some people, including one of my developers,
have begun to use “Volume Types” as a way to let users choose the kinds of
volumes they need. I believe this is
critical for compute clouds to cover the broadest spectrum of workloads. Of course this principle applies to other
resources and not just cinder volumes.
I saw a lightning talk about a nova driver for smartOS, a cool open source project from Joyent combining solaris zones, zfs, and kvm. There were ARM and Power CPU
support presented as well as a couple bare metal solutions. Intel, KVM, and OpenStack certainly make a
nice combination, but there’s so much more that’s possible with OpenStack
Finally, perhaps the most important thing about an OpenStack
cloud is interoperability. Starting with
the hypervisor, IBM has a solution that enables interoperability of images,
volumes, and networks across Xen, KVM, VMware and Hyper-V. We had a few sessions where we
discussed how we can bring the same interoperability to OpenStack. To start with, we need to be able to register
readonly cinder volumes as glance images.
Next to ensure we can scale out we need to be able to register multiple copies of the same image.
Finally, to take advantage of performance we need to abstract the clone
operation to enable Copy on Write (CoW), Copy on Read (CoR), as well as the
current local cache plus CoW mechanism for backwards compatibility and to
support 1Ge networks. Combining these
will enable images to work across multiple different hypervisors.
We also need interoperability with existing images which
means VMware and Amazon as the two most common forms of images. Today, it’s quite easy to automate simple
image formatting differences, but the challenge is in the assumptions made by
the images. The current direction for
OpenStack is to use config drive v2 to pass instance metadata to the
guest which is responsible to pull key system configuration such as hostnames,
credentials, and IP addresses. Typical VMware
images on the other hand generally expect either a push model, where the
hypervisor manipulates the filesystem prior to booting the image, or via their
guest agent, VMware tools.
To make matters worse, the current OpenStack assumes
different image formats for each supported hypervisor. One of the sad punchlines from Troy Torman’s keynote was that RackSpace’s private cloud distro named Alamo does not interoperate
with their publci cloud even though they’re both OpenStack. The good news is that, as Troy went on to
say, the time has come to focus on interoperability.
I got into a great conversation with Jesse Andrews, one of
the original OpenStack guys now at Nebula.
He described the approach to image interoperability by enabling cloud
operators to provide custom image workers at image ingestion time. This enables cloud providers to register
custom image processing code that gets called whenever an image is uploaded to
Glance. The simplest case of this is to
convert image formats to enable Alamo KVM images to run on RackSpace’s Xen
based public cloud.
Fortunately, IBM’s SmartCloud Provisioning (SCP) includes
some image management technologies which can help with the more challenging
problems mentioned above. Today’s SCP
2.1 will interrogate images in the library and check for cross hypervisor
compatibility. Users gain visibility
into this information and can optionally automate fixes wherever possible. We also use this technique to detect the
presence of a critical guest agent.
This brings me to one of my favorite little open source
projects, cloud-init created by Scot Moser at Canonical. If only it wasn’t GPL ;-). Many OpenStackers are using cloud-init to
automate the system configuration pull from config drive v2 mentioned above. This little bootstrap can do much much more,
but this is certainly a great job for this trusty little tool. Unfortunately, it’s only for linux. It’s even been made to work with fedora and
will likely be included in RHEL. Since
we cannot use GPL code in IBM products, we have a similar bootstrap for both
Windows and Linux guests. We’re working
with our lawyers to get approval to contribute this code to cloud-init. Of course,
if Canonical wants to use a more commercial friendly license like
OpenStack has done, then I could spend less time with lawyers and more time
hacking code ;-).
The beauty of this little bootstrap is its simplicity. This simplicity enables us to automatically
inject the bootstrap into Windows and Linux images. This will let us automatically fixup any old VMware,
or Hyper-V image so that it works on OpenStack.
This is a critical first step towards interoperability.
OpenStack is truly becoming an industry changing
and historic project. With so many
incredibly talented people from countless companies across the globe it’s no
wonder there is so much innovation in the community. I’m really happy to be a part of this growing
community. Together I believe we can

describe a root-cause detection scenario using IBM Smart Cloud
Given the ever increasing number of
virtual machine instances and VM images in a cloud ecosystem it is
becoming more and more important to track each of virtual image's
contents and configuration mainly for standardization and
Another situation where tracking this
content may also be useful is when there is the need to identify the
"drift" between a deployed virtual machine and the virtual
image that was used to create it, as for example in the scenario
As soon as a virtual machine gets
deployed from a virtual image its content will start to change; the
owner of that virtual machine begins using it by creating new files,
by using its applications, by installing/uninstalling software and so
on. Because of one of the above actions it
may happen that the system, or a specific application, may no longer
work correctly. At this point one of the things that
may be done to understand what could be the cause of such
malfunctions is to identify all the changes applied to the instance
compared to the source virtual image and look at them trying to
identify the “culprit” change in order to take appropriate
actions for repairing the situation. This is a typical scenario where the
IBM Virtual Image Library component of IBM Smart Cloud Provisioning
comes at help through its indexing
and drift analysis capabilities.

the IBM Virtual Image Library is a tool that provides sophisticated
image-management capabilities a customer can use to tackle the
difficult issues of understanding and controlling the contents of his
virtual infrastructure. Let's see how this tool may help in
troubleshooting the scenario we have described above.
The first step is to identify the
failing virtual machine among the ones available in the IBM Virtual
Image Library repositories. The
tool continuously indexes the configured repositories of virtual
machines and images so that its data model is always up to date with
the actual content of the virtual infrastructure.
Once the virtual machine has been
identified the next step is to retrieve the virtual image from which
it has been deployed. This is another feature provided by the tool
that keeps track of the entire tree of relationships among virtual
images and virtual machines available in the environment.
The next step, if not already
previously done, is to run an indexing operation of the virtual
machine so that its content, in terms of installed applications, OS
information and file-level information can be retrieved and brought
into the tool's data model.
Once the indexing is complete the
source virtual image content and the virtual machine content can be
compared. A list of differences is presented to the user so that
he/she can review them and decide what differences may be the most
likely reason for the problem.
For example, from this report the user
may notice that a suspect application has been installed into the
virtual machine that shouldn't be there or that a configuration file,
used by the application that is malfunctioning, has been modified.
He/she can use these hints as a
starting point for troubleshooting the issue and for taking repair

Two reports are also provided to allow users to understand how they are doing against their budget. The Line Item Budget report compares usage against budget at service level to help identify those services using more than their allotted budget. Similarly, the Client Budget Report is a new report showing a comparison of the client level budget with the actual charges for the client, with any deviations from the budget highlighted:
The Client Budget Report can also be used to help monitor the actual costs of a Cloud project. For example, the budget for different periods can be updated when you get a charges estimate for a new Cloud project and the report can then show the difference in what you were actually charged later. The difference will be as a result of server configurations or the duration of project changing after the estimate was produced. More details on this can be found in the cost preview blog entry here

The Percentage report allows users to understand the charges by sub-client and service by showing the total charges and its associated percentage of the overall costs by both client and service. For cloud users, this allows you to drilldown to understand the distribution between projects and teams. Users can expand and collapse the report to get a full understanding of all the areas being charged. Variance Reports
Reports to compare both the charges and usage between periods have been provided in this report pack. The Cost Variance report compares the charges from the current and previous period by client and service providing an understanding of the changes in charges over time. Similarly, the Resource Variance report compares the usage in the same way so users can see in detail how usage is changing from period to period. Drill Down Reports
Drill down through the account hierarchy and see the services being used by each client with the Application Cost Report. Cloud users can drilldown into their projects and teams to get an understanding of what resources are being used and their charges. Users can see the charges for each level in the Account hierarchy and the associated charge for each service and service group being used.

will this work with TUAM?
The first integration scenario covered is to provide a way to calculate the values for rates based on usage for cost recovery.
The TUAM integration blueprint provides a set of processes to create cubes containing data from TUAM. Summary data will be available for use by forecasting and planning processes and can also be made available for reporting, providing users with the ability to slice and dice the data to get a full understanding of their costs and usage as well as monitoring how costs are being recovered. Processes will also be available to write back any relevant calculations to the database which in the initial case will be the calculated rate values.
Using and then extending these processes will help users to model what-if scenarios to understand what the effects would be of adding additional costs, changes in usage or other scenarios that can occur across a financial year. Users can amend their costs or forecasted usage and redistribute these across clients or financial periods and see immediately the effect this will have on cost recovery.
IBM Cognos® TM1® is compatible with Tivoli Common Reporting so reports can be written based on the cubes defined in TM1. Extending the existing capability will allow users to create reports to show Actuals against Budget and Forecast so users can stay up-to-date with their cost recovery. Users will also be able to create their own reports to show data for their own specific needs.
By working with this initial package or blueprint, all the benefits of IBM Cognos® TM1® can be utilised to forecast and plan usage and monitor the progress of cost recovery.

The initial stages provide processes to create and incrementally update the summary data stored in TUAM. This allows users to be able to quickly query the data and get an understanding of the usage and charges being accrued. This will be created with a view to being a data source for the usage data required to calculate the values for the rates in the modelling process.
Furthermore, processes for creating a rate cube to contain all the rates and their new values will be provided. There will also be processes to take this data and write it back to the database for use in TUAM.

Most generally accepted definitions of Cloud Computing imply the notion of Pay per use. For a Service Provider this means defining how they intend to bill for Cloud Services, while for a Cloud enabled DataCentre in the enterprise this implies some form of showback/chargeback model. In this example, we want to have one machine to run an Application Server and one machine to run a Database and we need additional Tier1 storage in order to store the database data. The calculator shows how much this will cost per month overall and in terms of the two Service Offerings that this particular Cloud provides..
.Different customers can be assigned to different subscriptions
A subscription is a means to segment your customers into different groups such as by geography or customer type (direct, business partners etc).
In this example, the RATIONAL and TIVOLI customers are assigned to the US (United States) subscription. Customers with this subscription share the same set of available offerings and pay the same price for those offerings..
Offerings are defined once and then added to Subscriptions
Once they are part of a subscription, the actual rate values (price per unit) can be defined for each element of the offering template.

Ok, I admit, I was among the early adopters of the late nineties to
get hooked on VMWare. In fact, as an open source advocate I remember
playing with "
freemware", qemu, bochs, openVZ, and several
other x86 virtualization technologies. Likewise, I was among the first
to start using Amazon's Elastic Compute Cloud (EC2). I've been hooked
by x86 commodity hardware virtualization for a long time, and I thank
VMWare and Ed Bugnion in particular for that. But why choose VMWare
Ten years ago when the
CPUs made it hard to virtualize efficiently, VMWare was great. After
2003 if you were mostly interested in linux (king of the cloud) Xen was
an excellent open source alternative to virtualize x86 commodity
servers. In 2006 Amazon launched their EC2 service which would become
the defacto cloud standard. EC2 is built on Xen and is probably the
single biggest x86 virtualization environment in the world. Several
hundred thousand of my closest friends have found EC2 to be a fantastic
compute platform that goes beyond server virtualization, all without a
trace of VMWare. So why choose VMWare now?
modern CPUs include specific support for virtualization making it
easier to deliver efficient virtulaization without Xen's paravirt trick
or VMWare's innovative code patching. Current linux kernels include
support for KVM and I believe upstream kernels will again support Xen
natively. I remember when RedHat bought Qumranet,
developer of KVM, SPICE, and SolidICE (a desktop virtualization
technology) in 2008. Back then KVM didn't compare to VMWare. It
certainly was not "
back then. Three years later, KVM has matured extremely well. I think it really is "
for commodity OS virtualization. In my cloud development efforts I've
run hundreds of thousands of VMs on Xen and KVM during the past 2 1/2
years. While I really respect Xen, I've come to like and appreciate KVM
on modern CPUs since it's just so simple and easy to use. Today there
are so many "
choices for x86 virtualization from
Xen, KVM, and VirtualBox to Hyper-V, which Microsoft is practically
giving away just to keep Windows relevant in the datacenter. So why
choose VMWare now?
Is low end disruption
a threat for VMWare? Linux and Apache are certainly well established
in the datacenter preventing Microsoft's dominance over the desktop to
spill into the datacenter. Ten years ago when Windows had 90-something
percent market share of desktop computers, I myself considered Microsoft
an untouchable giant. Today, however, I think they're doomed because
Apple is cooler, all the kids have 'em along with iphones and and
ipads. By analogy, VMWare should be very concerned. IMHO, they can and
will lose their dominance and I think they'll do so by the classic Innovator's Dilemma
VMWare continues to cater to their traditional high end customers.
Meanwhile, nearly three quarters of a million developers are using
Amazon's cloud as their platform for new software applications and
services. And the best part is Amazon's cloud doesn't even need or use
VMWare. In fact, neither does Google's AppEngine or Microsoft's Azure.
Sense a pattern? If you believe, as I do, that we're on the cusp of a
new platform war to deliver the next generation of applications and
services, then the key to success is the application development
community. VMWare may have operations teams sold, but developers love
the cloud. Interestingly, they may not even have the ops guys sold
after all. Here's a forum thread titled "VMWare, a falling giant
"According to Ars Technica, 'A new survey seems to show that VMware's iron grip on the enterprise virtualization market is loosening,
with 38 percent of businesses planning to switch vendors within the
next year due to licensing models and the robustness of competing
hypervisors.' What do IT-savvy Slashdotters have to say about moving
away from one of the more stable and feature rich VM architectures
survey found that VMware is the primary hypervisor for server
virtualization in 67.6 percent of shops, followed by Microsoft's Hyper-V
with 16.4 percent and Citrix with 14.4 percent. Wow, this doesn't even
compare to Microsoft's former dominance for which I recall seeing
numbers as high as 98% market share!
So why choose VMWare now? Maybe the question should be, "
Have you tried an open source hypervisor lately?"
Or better yet, "
have you tried a public cloud yet"
Frankly, I don't even like using hypervisors directly anymore as I find
clouds much more powerful and easier to use. Why don't you give ISAAC a try
