IBM Smart Cloud Provisioning introduces PaaS capabilities with the possibility to create blueprints to standardize
the deployment of complex tiered applications like for example a J2ee three
tiers application made of a Http Server, an Application Server, and a DB Server,
each running on a different VM eventually configured on different network
segments. These blueprints are called patterns in IBM Workload Deployer
terminology, which is the foundation technology of SmartCloud Provisioning.
Virtual system patterns are used to define a... [More]
It’s been estimated that the number of virtual machines in data centers has increased at least tenfold in the last decade. More than fifty percent of virtualized environments now have more than one brand of hypervisor. The hypervisor promise of cutting infrastructure expense has given way to increases in licensing costs of more than three hundred percent. And the average number of images destroyed? Nobody knows. In short, the challenges of managing virtualized environments are mounting. The benefits of virtualization—from cost and labor savings... [More]
SmartCloud Provisioning is an infr astr uctu re-a s-a- serv ice cloud able
to work with different types of hypervisors. You can easily install
and configure new compute nodes to run your virtual images on KVM,
VMWare and Xen.
is a very interesting sentence, and it seems to be very useful. First
time I read it, I thought: “Do I need to have 3 different images?
Can I have same image running on any hypervisor?” Answers are yes
to both question. Depending on how you would run your image you could
need have different images for... [More]

With our 7.2.2 release we enhanced our extensibility model. What does this mean for you? private and public cloud service providers can extend their solution by adding extensions to their environment. For example they may want support for specific network or storage use cases. You will see extensions appear over the next weeks and months on the ISM library . ISVs, SIs, customers and IBMers can contribute to the extension community by building and uploading their accelerators. How you build Tivoli Service Automation Manager extension is... [More]
Would you like to show and charge
for usage of your IBM Power Systems server?
You may already be aware of the concept
of a virtualized system and virtual machines. This might be used by your organization as a means to share physical resources or form the basis for your cloud infrastructure. The usual goal of virtualization is to
centralize administrative tasks while improving scalability and work
loads. The question is how do you analyze the usage of such resources
and charge appropriately where required?
The Tivoli Usage and... [More]

Modern Cloud infrastructures are built leveraging thousands of highly distributed servers, used to provide services directly to customers over the Internet. The service provider has two extremely important objectives, which, unfortunately, are to some degree contrasting: a) ensure continuous availability of the Cloud service, and b) contain the cost of the infrastructure and administration (CAPEX and OPEX). There are several factors that have an impact on the availability of services, mostly related to infrastructure failures. Failures are not... [More]
I really liked the post “ Rapid deployments with IBM
SmartCloud Provisioning ” that explains
how simple and fast it is to deploy instances using SmartCloud Provisioning.
But if is also important to have a flexible way for passing parameters during
the deployment in order to configure and/or customize the deployed instances. IBM SmartCloud Provisioning provides in the
launch instance panel, and also using the CLI, the “user_data” text field that
can be used for this scope.

People always ask about failures. That's great that the cloud software can survive failures, but what about my user workloads? Of course the simplest yet all too unsatisfying answer is that your application should be designed to tolerate failures and since the cloud is resilient you can always get more cloud resources. Unfortunately, most people aren't satisfied with this answer. Many enterprise IT folks are used to running expensive servers with very expensive fiber channel attached SAN storage. But what happens with commodity storage... [More]

Here are a few basic steps to get the most out of the the VMware VI agent: 1) Install the latest vCenter from VMware. The best release is the latest release, vCenter 4.1, and it has shown superior performance over earlier releases. If you are still using vCenter v2.5, be sure to install the latest level, Update 6 (build 227637). The early update levels of vCenter v2.5 will not work with the agent, and VMware currently supports only Update 6. 2) Install the latest VMware VI agent. If you haven't already, install the new v6.2.3, available... [More]
