Abstract

One common problem with TRIRIGA installs in Unix/Linux environments

Body

As a long time TRIRIGA infrastructure specialist, I spend a lot of time solving problems with installations in Unix/Linux environments. Let’s face it, the security model of the Unix style operating system (OS) is both powerful and perplexing. Many users do not understand how permissions are granted to the various files copied into this OS. The short of it is, the user that is logged in during an install becomes the owner of the files installed and anyone else will need to have privileges issued to them to access these files.

In multiple product applications like TRIRIGA, there is a database install, an application install, and application server install.. For TRIRIGA to properly interact with the products it relies on, some of the configuration or log files may be shared. If the WebSphere Application Server is installed as one user and the TRIRIGA application is installed as a different user, the sharing of files can be difficult at best if you can determine which files need to be shared.

Because of these privilege issues, one of the most common problems we have in Unix/Linux environments is that one team member has installed the application server and another has installed the application so the products cannot interact and the install fails.

Privileges can be a common problem with any multi product stack in a Unix/Linux environment. For TRIRIGA installs, it is important to install both the application and the reliant technologies using the same user.
