The last several releases of the OpenStack Cinder project addressed various disaster recovery (DR) scenarios. In Mitaka, replication v2.1 (codename ‘Cheesecake’) was introduced. This admin API was designed to solve a true DR scenario, when an entire backend is failed over to another backend on a secondary site. There are other DR scenarios in which the user wants to have better control over the replication granularity. For this purpose, the Cinder team has decided to provide tenant-facing group APIs, allowing volume grouping for a tenant. This enables volume group replication and failover without affecting the entire backend.
This feature (codename ‘Tiramisu’) was introduced in Pike release, and implemented by IBM Storage Driver for OpenStack.
The IBM Storage Driver for OpenStack supports the following IBM storage systems:
- IBM DS8000 Family
- IBM FlashSystem A9000
- IBM FlashSystem A9000R
- IBM Spectrum Accelerate
- IBM XIV Storage System
The user can choose between a generic group replication and consistency group (CG) replication. For consistency group replication, the driver utilizes the storage capabilities to handle CGs and replicate them to a remote site. On the other hand, in generic group replication, the driver replicates each volume individually. In addition, the user can select the replication type. For example, IBM FlashSystem A9000 and A9000R storage systems support both synchronous and asynchronous replication.The minimum Cinder client version that supports group replication is 3.38.
The following functions were added to the IBM Storage Driver for OpenStack to support group replication:
- Enable replication
- Disable replication
- Failover replication
The following example illustrates configuration of a replicated consistency group.
- Create sync replicated consistency-group.
- Create a volume type for replication.
#cinder type-create rep-vol-1
- Configure the volume type.
#cinder type-key rep-vol-1 set replication_type='<is> sync' replication_enabled='<is> True'
#cinder group-type-create rep-cg-1
- Configure the group type.
#cinder group-type-key rep-cg-1 set group_replication_enabled='<is> True' replication_type='<is> sync' consistent_group_snapshot_enabled='<is> True'
- Create a CG, using existing group type and volume type.
#cinder group-create rep-cg-1 rep-vol-1 --name replicated-cg-1
- Create a volume and add it to the CG.
- Create a replicated volume.
#cinder create --name vol-1 --volume-type rep-vol-1 1
- Add the volume to the CG.
#cinder group-update --add-volumes 91492ed9-c3cf-4732-a525-60e146510b90 replicated-cg-1
- Enable replication.
#cinder group-enable-replication replicated-cg-1
- Disable replication.

- Fail over replicated CG.

It's HAK release time again !!
As part of our ongoing efforts to keep the IBM XIV Host Attachment Kit up to date and provide enhanced and new functionality, we are proud to announce the latest Host Attachment Kit version 1.9.0.
In this new version we have added support for several new platform versions:
Solaris 11, the recently released Red Hat Enterprise Linux 6.3 and the latest AIX 5.3, AIX 6.1 and AIX 7.1 Service Packs which introduce IBM XIV LUN 0 support.
But we did more than that. We have also enhanced the current HAK functionality by providing our UNIX & Linux users with manual pages accessible by using the 'man' command. Now you can access the documentation for each HAK command by executing 'man <HAK command>'.
In addition, in AIX OS, 'xiv_attach' is now capable of automatic discovery of connected XIV systems and host definition on the connected XIV, by utilizing the latest AIX 5.3, AIX 6.1 and AIX 7.1 SP, in which XIV LUN0 support was added. This aligns the XIV support in AIX OS with that of other supported OS-s. Moreover, LUN0 support also introduces a new HAK utility to AIX HAK users - 'xiv_syslist' , which you can read more about here
The log collection utility, 'xiv_diag', was enhanced and now can be executed in unattended mode by providing the command with the destination path for the compressed log collection package as a command line argument.

In this information center, or IC, you can find the relevant
documentation of all the solutions that we offer, including information of both
past versions and the latest versions.
Whether our host software solution is for XIV, DS8000,
Storwize, or any other IBM storage system – the release notes, user guide, or
installation guide are available on the IC in either PDF or HTML format
(whatever suits you best).
The solutions are categorized on the navigation tree under
four main categories: business continuity, management, host connectivity, and
virtualization. Keep in mind, however, that some solutions could belong in more
than one category. For example, a solution such as IBM Storage Management
Console for VMware vCenter is placed under the virtualization category, but it may
also be regarded as a powerful management solution. For another example, our
XIV and SVC adapters for VMware vCenter Site Recovery Manager, also placed under
virtualization, may also be regarded as business continuity solutions.
In any case, we hope that the organization of our solutions
on the IC makes sense to you, and that the information is helpful. If not,

It's raining new releases here at IBM HSG, the latest software released from our team is the IBM XIV HAK v2.1.0.
The HAK is already a well known, widely used toolkit, therefore in this post we will focus on what's new in this latest release, and what will you gain by installing or upgrading to this version.
The first feature to note is the added support for version 11.3.0 of XIV microcode and more importantly for the Online Volume Migration (OLVM) feature. Now the "good old" xiv_devlist utility also presents the OLVM state of each and every volume exposed to the server, providing the host and storage administrators an easily accessible tool to stay updated with the migration state of the volumes under their responsibility, without the need to access the XIV Management GUI.
In addition, the recently introduced host diagnostic utility, the XIV Host Profiler , can now be defined as a scheduled task right from the Host Attachment Kit Wizard - xiv_attach. No need to remember to set it separately, the user will be asked during host configuration if a task should be scheduled to run the utility periodically.
We've also improved the xiv_devlist and xiv_syslist commands' CSV file format output utilities. From this release, by adding the --no-headers argument, the column headers will be omitted from the generated CSV file.
On top of the above-mentioned features and enhancements several stability issues were also fixed. The detailed list of those issues can be found in the Release Notes document coupled with the software package.

Let’s face it: even the most resilient, robust, and secure storage sites, located above ground or even underground, could potentially be exposed, in a certain degree, to all kinds of disasters that may temporarily or indefinitely halt the site operation. This could be an extreme weather condition or natural disaster (hurricane, tornado, earthquake, etc.), a prolonged and unplanned interruption of power supply (power grid or power station failure), an accident, act of war, cyberattack, and who knows what else – God forbid…
Enterprises that rely on non-stop, continuous, and unbreakable access to data, as well as on the ability to keep existing data integrity in parallel to on-going update/writing operations at the highest possible standards, must have disaster prevention and recovery mechanisms in place, ready to be used at any point in time.
Enterprise-class storage systems, such as IBM XIV Gen3, IBM FlashSystem A9000, and IBM FlashSystem A9000R, provide advanced site mirroring capabilities, either synchronous or asynchronous, including 3-site mirroring for XIV Gen3, and HyperSwap for FlashSystem A9000 and A9000R. These native underlying replication and high availability (HA) technologies allow these IBM storage systems to serve not only conventional hosts and clusters, but also virtual machines in VMware and Microsoft cloud environments, as well as OpenStack cloud nodes.
Virtual machines duplicates can be deployed at a secondary backup site, together with the backup storage systems to serve those sites.
- In a Microsoft Azure environment, automatic failover to the backup or primary site is natively supported by the storage system, by using Microsoft Azure Site Recovery.
- In a VMware environment, virtual machines can be recovered by using VMware Site Recovery Manager (SRM) together with the IBM Spectrum Accelerate Family Storage Replication Adapter (SRA), which also supports – starting from version 3.0.0 – HyperSwap operations.
- OpenStack high availability configurations are also supported.

The long and arduous road to HyperSwap is over! We are happy to announce a release of a new software version of our blazingly fast FlashSystem A9000 and A9000R. This is version 12.1, which brings HyperSwap to our storage clients. HyperSwap solution is an ingenious way of providing high availability based on active-active pairing of storage systems per volume or per consistency group. Each volume or consistency group pair uses synchronous replication to keep both systems updated at all times. When certain conditions apply, an automatic and completely transparent failover is performed, so that the applications experience no downtime. As soon as the actual failure is recovered, the pair is automatically resynchronized.
For easier integration with VMware, Linux, AIX and Windows platforms, we've upgraded these Cloud Storage Solution products:

Once again, we are proud to announce the release of the latest IBM XIV Host Attachment Kit 1.10.0.
The main feature of this release is Windows Server 2012 support. From this version onward, HAK is fully compatible with your new & shiny installation of Windows Server 2012. Go ahead and take it for a spin!
As part of our ongoing efforts to improve ease of use, we have translated the Windows Installer of HAK to Japanese as well, for the benefit of our Japanese speaking users. More languages to follow.
In addition to the above, we have also resolved several bugs and known issues from previous versions, including among others:
- Increased reliability in regard to volume size reporting in xiv_devlist
- Improved stability during the configuration phase of iSCSI connections on Solaris
- Path counts are reported more accurately in xiv_devlist on HP-UX
- We have resolved a known issue in xiv_syslist on HP-UX, regarding XIV System modules and ports connected to the host
- xiv_diag now runs more smoothly on Red Hat Enterprise Linux and Suse Linux Enterprise Server distributions
