New support for the COPY option for BIND SERVICE
By Thomas Eng and Emily Alameida With APAR PH14688, BIND SERVICE now supports the COPY option to copy existing REST services to either local or remote Db2 servers running on Db2 12 with versioning enabled. Many customer environments do not permit applications to be directly developed and deployed on production systems. You can now code and test native REST services in a development system, and use the new BIND SERVICE COPY option to promote those services to production environment. The existing tools you are already familiar with can be... [More]

Db2 12 implicitly drops explicitly created universal and LOB table spaces with function level 506
By Regina Liu , Long Tu , and Jennie Chang . With Db2 12 function level 506 at application compatibility level V12R1M506 or higher, Db2 now automatically drops explicitly created universal and LOB table spaces when the tables they contain are dropped. More specifically, the following enhancements are introduced: If you drop a base table that resides in an explicitly created universal table space, Db2 implicitly drops the table space along with the table , instead of returning an error in SQLCODE -669. If you drop a system-period temporal... [More]

By Paul McWilliams. Db2 12 function level 506 is now available. It introduces new alternative spellings for existing SQL built-in functions to improve compatibility with competitive database platforms, the SQL standard, and the Db2 product family. It also introduces a new capability to implicitly drop explicitly created table spaces when dropping tables, which we'll cover in more detail in a future post. You can activate function level 506 after you apply the PTF for APAR PH16829 . The new alternative function names are supported for... [More]

Rebind packages with fewer application outages in Db2 12 function level 505
By Tammie Dang and Paul McWilliams . Db2 12 function level 505 (activation enabled by APAR PH09191 ) introduces a new REBIND phase-in capability for application packages, which enables DBAs to issue REBIND PACKAGE commands successfully when target packages are being concurrently executed. This new capability enables DBAs to deploy the new features in new Db2 12 function levels, which often require packages to be rebound at a higher APPLCOMPAT level, without having to either wait for a suitable window when applications are not running, or take... Best practices: Monitor and control Db2 system resources with profile tables
By Adrian Burke and Paul McWilliams . In Db2 for z/OS you can use the profile monitoring capability to monitor or limit resource consumption by distributed database facility (DDF) workloads. This capability, which was first introduced in Db2 10, provides a helpful solution for clients who have been burdened in recent years by trying to control the consumption of resources for distributed workloads, as the number of inbound connections and consumption of database access threads by ill-behaved or unpredictable applications have impacted Db2 for... Autobind failures now issue console messages in Db2 12
By Chris Crone and Randy Nakagawa . One of the current Db2 for z/OS Ideas with the most votes ( RFEs are now Ideas ) is to provide a message when an autobind fails and a package goes inoperative. We are happy to announce that we have now satisfied that requirement. After you apply APAR PH13550 , if an autobind fails resulting in an inoperative package, Db2 issues console message DSNT500I . An autobind occurs when a package that is invalid is executed. There are many ways that packages become invalid but the most common are related to ALTER... [More]
