As the volumes of data stored by organizations and the value of that data grow exponentially, there is the need for the best in data backup and recovery packages. The IBM Tivoli Storage Manager (TSM) enables the user to insert objects not only via backup, but also through space management and archive tools. The use of TSM gives very specific benefits for organizations operating with Virtual Environments and Virtual Machines; the software for this being referred to as VMware. IBM’s TSM for Virtual Environments v6.4 is the market leader in data protection for VMware.
This white paper is based on a presentation to the Tivoli User Community on TSM for Virtual Environments. The presenter was Kumar Kancharana, an IBM-certified TSM Administrator with Piedmont Healthcare. As well as covering the core of his presentation, the paper also includes the audience Q&A as an appendix.
The overall purpose of the presentation and was to provide insight into the benefits of TSM, to discuss simplifying procedures and touch upon successfully implementing TSM, TDP for VMware 6.4.
Whilst not seeking to provide ‘end-to-end’ implementation advice, this white paper sets out the background to TSM for Virtual Environments v6.4 and provides some insights into the tools and its implementation. The white paper will be of benefit to those who already have TSM in their environments as well as for those who are debating an implementation.
