We are very excited to have accomplished entrepreneur Mark Zawacki as a mentor for the upcoming SmartCamp in Istanbul on October 2nd-3rd. Mark is the Founder and Managing Partner of Milestone Group . Since 2001, he has led/supervised engagement teams on more than 200+ tech, media and telco (TMT) clients globally, working a myriad of growth and revenue-related initiatives including strategy, innovation, business and corporate development, alliances/partnering and international expansion. We asked him about his experience and insight into... [More]
It’s been a busy start to the second half of the SmartCamp year. The program has expanded rapidly from 9 cities last year to over 20 this year. We re-started after the summer on August 31st in Paris (who says Europe has too many holidays?) before moving to Sydney on the 6th Sept and Singapore on the 10th. Overall there have been many highlights, however I wanted to call out a few and give a flavor of the differences between the different locations. Paris We held our first ‘healthy breakfast’ to discuss an extension to the program for startups... [More]
Andrew Stevens, IBM MD, was blown away by the five
finalists. Seems like it will very difficult
to split the finalists to identify a clear winner. We also heard from Peter Kazacos - a Sydney local , very successful Serial Entrepreneur who talked about his start in the IT industry starting in the late '70's. Peter talked about the importance of leveraging well known brands (ie, AMP and IBM) and to get as much industry recognition as possible. Finally, Peter talked about the importance of raising equity - ie, it is better to own a small... [More]
We’re halfway through the mentoring sessions. Maybe I was a sceptic – but I wasn’t sure or
confident that the mentoring sessions would function well.
I stand corrected.
Each of the five tables look deeply engaged – with at least
five mentors on each – listening, laughing, and providing advice. The mentors are all very experienced in
industry, business, technology, and many of them are serial entrepreneurs.
The conversations are valuable – the insights offered are

My biggest take away so far from this event is the quality
of the presentations and the solutions.
No doubt the technologies are complex – but the presenters
make them sound simple and very logical.
For example – I was not aware that growing potatoes (world’s
fourth largest crop) could be so interesting !
Increasing yields, minimising carbon footprints and using less water to
grow more is turning into a real science.
The folks at CropLogic (NZ) are onto a big thing.
I am a guest at the IBM SmartCamp Sydney finals event and
have just witnessed the first round of presentations by the five finalists.
Over the past few years I have attended a number of similar
events – both as a judge, a guest, a speaker – and have to say how impressed I have
been by both the presenters and the technology / solutions that they are
bringing to the market.
Entrepreneurs are a special breed of people. Confident, articulate and full of drive and
conviction that their company will grow, succeed and help solve... [More]
It was a truly unique experience to be a fly on the wall at
yesterday’s mentoring sessions at SmartCamp Boston. Six startup companies gave six minute pitches
to a room full of mentors, venture capitalists, angel investors, academic
thought leaders, and industry experts.
Then the real fun began – critiquing them. The startups were eager for the feedback and
constructive criticism of the mentors, as they understood that certain aspects
of their pitches were not as strong as others. The mentors were very impressed with the
My previous post ( http://ibm.co/KMRCQ6 )
expressed my awe in regard to the expertise of the mentors at this week’s
SmartCamp Boston. And rightfully so –
being in a room full of minds from vastly different industries and experiences
produces a wealth of expertise that you just can’t get in situations outside of
these. From anecdotal advice to tested
business strategy, the mentors offered ideas to these new startups in a genuine
effort to help them overcome challenges and grow their businesses.
After hearing the presentations from... [More]
In a few hours, I’ll be sitting in a room with six startup
tech companies as they pitch their businesses to a room full of experienced
mentors, from industry experts to academic thought leaders. I am at the IBM Innovation Center in Waltham,
Massachusetts where SmartCamp Boston will kick off. This is my first experience at a SmartCamp,
but it’s incredible to be a fly on the wall at an event like this. A SmartCamp is a mentoring and networking
event aimed at identifying early stage technology entrepreneurs developing
technologies that... [More]

So, we have a rare treat for you starting today. Three students majoring in business at San Jose State University (SJSU) will be guest blogging the SmartCamp event on this site. The students won an entrepreneurship writing contest set by their professor Larry Gee.
Beyond the energy of youth, being from a generation that grew up around technology and having a fresh perspective on life, each of these students presented a different view on entrepreneurship. To introduce them, let me quote from their winning entries.
This is a big a week in the world of startup/entrepreneur events.
