C-B4, the winner of Smartcamp Israel
in 2011 reveal their secrets to success
So who are C-B4? Before we share some advice on how to come out on top at Smart Camp, we’d like to give
you a little background on the company, and how we’ve differentiated ourselves in the marketplace.
C-B4 (context based forecasting) is an Israeli company with a strong foundation in academia that
implements advanced research in algorithms, machine learning and information theory to find patterns,
revealed and hidden, in “Big Data”. Our play yard is the gap between the speed of generating data (it is
a common fact that data grows in an exponential rate) and the ability to model and understand what
practical values the data contains.
C-B4’s solution is a predictive analytics engine which creates smarter and more intelligent value mining
processes for organizations.
Almost fully automated, the engine provides instrumented analytics with no need for data mining experts
or statisticians. C-B4 delivers better results because the engine is able to locate context based
patterns in the “Big Data” that others can’t. We don’t force a set of pre-determined pattern models on
the data. C-B4’s engine learns the data and builds a specific pattern model for each data set – thus,
“the data builds the model”.
To date, C-B4’s engine has delivered proven results with measurable ROI in several verticals – retail,
supply chain management, predictive maintenance for telecommunication networks, CRM solutions and HLS

Why Smart Camp is worth the investment
In order to win Smart Camp, you’ll have to have a clear vision for your startup – what is your solution
really about? How does it help the customer? How does it drive value? And really, is your solution indeed
an innovative and revolutionary, or are you just “smooth talking” about its abilities in those fields?
Though the interview process, the mentoring, and the pitch process you’ll have plenty of time to refine
the way you communicate.
And hey – aren’t these the questions, every startup is phrasing the answer to, almost every day? Smart
Camp forces you to focus on the questions you’ll need to answer to become a successful business, and
gives you all the help you will need to do it. Regardless of the outcome, simply taking part in the event
will give your startup a lift.
If you progress to the finals and win, the rewards are obviously there too: an international panel of
expert mentors; a greatly enhanced network of partners; guidance from one of the world’s leading tech
companies; a stronger platform on which to approach potential investors. As a tiny startup, you get
attention by standing on the shoulder of a giant like IBM – go for it!

Winning IBM Smartcamp – Some Tips
1. The passion; the desire; the flames – I believe these words are crucial to success
The same passion that drove us during years of academic research; the same desire that accompanies every
new market opportunity; the same flames that enlighten every new business solution we came up with –
that’s what drove us to participate in Smart Camp Israel, and to win.
To impress the panel though, you’ll have to turn this belief into an action. For us, the challenge was
translating a body of academic research into a viable commercial enterprise – demonstrating the real
business value. Focusing on a topical theme like “Big Data” wasn’t enough.
2. An analytical approach- let your mind be inspired by passion, but make sure that your actions are a
result of an analytic approach. The same way you plan to penetrate a specific market; the same way you
plan how to establish a new market. This is way we analyzed how to address the IBM Smart Camp campaign.
3. Open your heart and mind to new ideas, and experience – even when you’re convinced that you have the
right approach and emphasis; even after you’ve put all the effort into shaping your pitch speech and
presentation. Recognize good ideas – don’t block them.
Throughout Smart Camp you will meet experienced experts who are willing to share their insights on what
might it will take to succeed. Be willing to walk the additional extra mile and invest what is needed to
reflect their experience in your presentation.
And don’t just learn from your mentors – observe your fellow finalists closely. Listen to them; talk to
them; share with them. Throughout the contest we supported each other, contributing what we thought might
help. In doing this, we learnt a great deal.
4. Your solution is a good one? A great one? Let IBM know. Describe the way it is performing for a
specific use. And relate it to them. The more your idea ties to the IBM vision, the better. Consider what
your solution has to do with a smarter, instrumented and intelligent world. The results of that analysis
should be the foundation of your presentation.
5. Smart Camp for most is a once (or maybe twice) in a time life experience so take the opportunity to
network and learn – don’t just narrow your focus on winning. Meet new people; immerse yourself in the
innovation you are exposed to; learn some new jokes. The quality of the company you’ll keep and the ideas
you’ll share are second to none.
The benefits of winning
It’s still early days, but from a business perspective, the benefits of winning Smart Camp Israel have
been immediate. As we write this post, we’re engaged defining several solutions with IBM infrastructures
in the retail and HLS space.
Smart Camp was a hidden gem for us, another pattern we’ve found for success, and it’s been our pleasure
sharing it – good luck!
