Today nine entrepreneurial prospects gave their six minute elevator speech on how their idea can make a hardened impact in the world of social business, with hopes of further aligning their strategy with IBM's Smarter Planet Vision. Within simply one hour, we were immersed into nine completely unique business developments that each have already made a great stride in their global industry.
To get an idea of the span of their business plans, ideas ranged from online water toxicity monitoring to skin cancer monitoring to the use of analytics to gauge consumer demand for retailers. Simply, business plans spanned across many industries addressing to each their own a different social aspect with possibilities in the business world.
While listening to these pitches, I could not help but wonder: what was the initial motivation or the spark that lit these entrepreneurial fires? When and where was that opportunity seen and what was the driving aspect that made these entrepreneurs decide to venture into that market? Answers can be simply - a high revenue market or a true passion for solving that particular social problem. Regardless, each had impressive pitches that a graduating college business student can only hope to deliver one day.
In brief, below will list the nine companies competing for the top spot in IBM's SmartCamp Global Finals Competition (in alphabetical order):
Bit Carrier - providing real time traffic information to local governments for smart cities
C-B4 - analytics software that helps organizations find hidden patterns in consumer behavior to make smarter business decisions
Connect M - an energy management solution system through monitoring and analyzing
idxp - turning consumer behavior into sales through innovating tracking technology and data collection
Localytics - analyzing mobile apps through extracting information from when and where users use their apps and how to apply that towards making better application
Palmap - an innovating indoor map platform, basically taking GPS indoors
ProFitero - helping retailers become smarter with their pricing through data collection
SecureWatersInc - an online real time water toxicity monitor for early alerting of toxins in surface water
Skin Scan - using a mathematical algorithm to possibly predict the traces of skin cancer through a mobile app
Ideas? All over the place. Possibilities? Endless. Winner? One.
We hope to further speak with each business individually answer the questions stated above as well as to track the possible changes to their strategy after the future feedback they are given. This is entrepreneurship at its rawest form and this is where we will see the flexibility of each business strategy - not only how they will and can change their strategy, but how to keep their initial plan and values along the way.
