SmartCamp finals: focus on BitCarrier

The second cycle of IBM SmartCamp gives stage to the nine finalists who come from different parts of the world. Today they had a chance to pitch their business ideas in front of a medium-sized audience of IBM professionals and Venture Capital firms.
Mike Riegel of IBM, who opened up the conference with an overview of the program, explained that Venture Capital ecosystem is the key to growth and innovation. The startup companies presenting today are the next generation of IBM’s ecosystem. The entrepreneurs are tomorrow’s leaders in innovative technologies that help improve the quality of life in urbanized settings and beyond creating “smart” cities. The saturation of urban life is set to be simplified and improved with the solutions developed by each of the presenters at the Bently Reserve.
The solutions are not location specific; they are developed to work globally utilizing the potential of emerging and recently established technologies. The business ideas are in regard of consumer behavior analysis, data analysis, and data monitoring. End users of startup ideas range from policy makers and business professionals to everyday consumer like me and you.
BitCarrier, one of the finalist companies, explains a benefit of their mission of providing real time traffic information is enabling people to have more time for work or more time for their family. Knowing where the traffic congestions are, allows people to find an alternative route that will be the fastest. The anonymous digital footprint that is collected via smart phones, navigation systems and Bluetooth is analyzed through BitCarrier, simplified to valuable information, and organized as a tool that is ready to use. Christina Galan, the CFO and co-founder, says, “We are going to make cities a better place to live in.” The company’s innovative solution fits into IBM’s vision of a Smarter Planet.
BitCarrier is only one of nine companies that is taking on a challenge to present their business plan compacted in a 6 minute pitch. The critique by the industry leaders, largest venture capital firms and you (via voting) awards the title “2011 IBM Global Entrepreneur of the Year” to one company. Subsequently the mentoring sessions that are going on all throughout the day are meant to shape up and refine presentation and business tactics that the companies are currently using.
