Accenture’s article: “Social Media: Rewriting the Rules on Content Management” gives insight into the shift in the rules of content management that has taken place since the introduction of social media. In the past, as Accenture describes, content media management was based upon “push content.” In today’s environment, users expect a “pull content” approach in which they can obtain real-time information which is relevant to their interests and objectives. This article briefly reflects upon the introduction of email as a business tool. Originally, emails were highly controlled in content, a top down approach to the utilization of the new tool. Over the years, a drastic change has taken place in how much of a free hand employees have with using this and other subsequently introduced technology. This increase in employee empowerment and responsibility suggests that employers recognize, considering the technological competency of current generation of workers as well as the far-reaching benefits of social media, a hierarchical flattening is more appropriate in consideration of the approach to usage of this technology.
