China is well known for its efforts to control Internet content both provided to and supplied by its own nation. Kevin Voigt and Lara Farrar from CNN recently wrote the article “China cracks down on websites allegedly spreading coup rumors” which gives a report on China’s recent efforts to crack down on some of its large microblogging websites for allegedly “…allowing rumors to spread.” (CNN.com, 2012)
The Chinese government evidently “….worries the information could …have some mobilization functions, that it will make people worried about the stability of society”, according to Zhazng Ahi An of Sun Yat-sen University of Guangzhou. This approach may not necessarily be unique to China, but it offers a very different perspective in comparison to, say, the United States, of how to handle social media.
