Pulse 2013 Demonstration on Tying Business and IT Views

Body

Here's a video of capabilities developed by IBM Research being demonstrated at the Pulse Integration Center.  It shows a solution to tie discovered business processes to the underlying IT resources with a Jazz for Service Management OSLC registry. Come see us at pedestal 82 of the Pulse Solution Expo.

Solution Overview

Bridging the gap between business and IT is a common challenge. For example, when a customer's shipment is missing, knowing the application server that last processed the customer's order can help diagnose if the root cause of the problem is a malfunctioning server.

Our solution to this problem does not require predefined models of your business or IT artifacts, but works with your existing deployment. The main steps in the solution are as follows:
  1. At the business level, the Business Process Insight tool can process unstructured log files and events, and discover a previously unmodelled end-to-end business processes.
  2. Likewise, at the IT level, tools such as IBM TADDM can discover the IT resources in the system, such as application servers and computers.
  3. Mappings between the process and IT resources (discovered in steps 1 and 2, respectively) are established.
  4. The above three artifacts (the process model, IT resource data, and mappings) are stored in a Jazz for Service Management linked-data registry.

The insights gained from tying the business and IT views can be useful in problem determination, workload optimization, and billing, among other uses. The video walks through a couple of these scenarios and demonstrates the business value.
