Administration Content Pack for IBM Tivoli Monitoring

Today IBM Tivoli Monitoring solution is extensively used to optimize the performance and availability of the entire IT infrastructure. ITM provides a single customizable workspace portal to proactively manage the health and availability of your IT infrastructure. Together with the solutions comes the challenge of administering the solution and the expertise required to do the same. There are number of best practices that one needs to follow to ensure the solution is fine tuned for optimal performance. Also, there are many onetime configurations that are required to integrate the solution with other products. These configurations require subject matter expertise.

To address these challenges/requirements, we now have the Administration Content Pack for IBM Tivoli Monitoring utility, which enables users to adopt best practices and configurations with minimal knowledge.

Administration Content Pack for IBM Tivoli Monitoring is a command line utility to administer various health aspects of IBM Tivoli Monitoring. You can view health status and modify the current IBM Tivoli Monitoring configuration to match the best practice. It has provides one time configuration tasks, which encapsulates various complex steps required for performing configuration.

Administration capabilities:

Currently the utility is supported on Linux based environments and executes locally on the ITM component nodes. It provides the following categories of administration tasks:

• Best practice or recommended tasks:  Checks whether current configurations are according to best practice solutions and recommendations (information inherited and codified from ITM SME's - Subject matter experts).

The tasks in this category include:

-     TEMS-Audit-TASK: Manage log size and number of log files in the installation directory

-     Config-HeartBeat-Interval:  Configure heartbeat interval for the monitoring server

                     -     ITM-de-health-check: Deployment Engine Health checker

• One time configuration tasks: Encapsulates various complex steps required for configuration.

The tasks in this category include:

-     KDS-STATS-Configuration: Configuration for call count usage statistics for monitoring server based on KDS-STATS parameter

-     TEMS-DISABLE-FSYNC-CALLS: Disable fsync() calls for the monitoring server

-     TEMS-Ulimit-Configuration: Ulimit configuration for open file descriptor, stack size and file size on monitoring server

Use recommended task to configure setting for the monitoring server according to the best practice. One-time tasks can be used to perform a prerequisite or a one-time configuration setting for the monitoring server.

Downloading Administration Content Pack for IBM Tivoli Monitoring utility:

Administration Content Pack for IBM Tivoli Monitoring is available on Integrated Service Management (ISM) Library for download.

Using Administration Content Pack for IBM Tivoli Monitoring utility:

1. Download the utility from on Integrated Service Management (ISM) Library.
2. Copy the AdministrationContentPackForIBMTivoliMonitoring.zip package to the system where ITM components are installed, and extract the contents of the package into a temporary directory contentPack_dir.

Example: /opt/contentPack_dir

The extraction creates the following directories under contentPack_dir: bin, docs, etc, lib, and var.

3. Open the command window and browse to contentPack_dir/bin.
4. Set the JAVA_HOME environment variable to point to IBM JRE 1.6 or SDK 1.6 in the setServiceEnv.sh file. The JAVA_HOME variable is required to run the launch.sh program.

Important: The JAVA_HOME environment variable must contain only one JAVA/JRE path in order to avoid conflicts.

5. Run the CLI with the required operation.
