I was recently asked for recommendations on how user experience teams can design and understand the relationship between elements of the UI design (vs. the underlying software objects). Those (UX and UI) are two good topics unto themselves! I'm going to start with UI design first, only because, each of us have probably used, and have gotten frustrated by a really poor UI design at least once in our lifetime. Everyone has their own story here (comment about it if you'd like), but there's nothing more frustrating to me when designers make that simple "check box versus radio button" mistake. All of those guidelines for best choice for UI elements have been around since before Windows 3.0, roughly 1990, that's over 20 years ago! Of course, the choice of UI elements should be driven by the user experience (UX). Perhaps in the Agile world you'll know this as user stories, or storyboards, which are arguably subsets of the modern day use case (thank you Ivar Jacobson!) and the person who asked this original question also referenced a few other topics that IBMers had worked on in the past:

I recall plenty of laughs around the office for these words, "Who's the best modeler (of all of our architects and developers)?" And while some were dressed better than others, we, of course, were referring to who had the best design or UML experiences to share with customers! Most people like to hear about others experiences, to "learn from the best" or "find emerging trends" or "accelerate their knowledge" and this series of three sessions will be exactly that: one client's approach and experience in using more advanced design techniques to power their business' software strategy, development and deployment. Hey software developers, engineers, architects, or programmers, we all do design. But how can you improve upon your designs? You probably do it now through "peer reviews" or "architectural reviews", which can often take a lot of time to: - prepare (reports, presentations),
- coordinate a meeting (with one or more busy peers),
- capture feedback (writing up suggestions), and
- following up.
Bottom line: your team's time is valuable, and improving designs is a team collaboration effort that we recognize needs to be more productive for the entire team to deliver software that powers our business. Join this

As an architect\designer, we should have a significant role to play in the identification of risks - and - in mitigating those risks. I see modeling (and the use of tools such as the SOAD Model Accelerator) as playing a key role in helping with these efforts. Simply drawing some squiggly lines or performing a bit of handwaving has never done much. What skills, tools or techniques do you depend on? Lee.

To celebrate summer and our latest version of the SOAD Model Accelerator, we're having a contest. We're having a draw to give away printed copies of our book Designing Solutions using the SOAD Model Accelerator. To enter the draw, send an email to bookpromo@emphasysgrp.com before midnight (ET) on July 31st. Aug 15th. Note: We had a snafu with our email server and some people had issues entering the contest. To make sure that everyone has a chance to enter, we've extended the contest.
In total, we'll be giving away ten (10) copies of the book. As always, we continue to provide free access (registration required) to the ebook. Thanks! Lee. Lee Ackerman VP Products & CTO The Emphasys Group

What's new in RAD and RSA 8.5? Attend this session and learn about the top new features of RSA (Rational Software Architect) and RAD (Rational Application Developer) that can save you time and money. In RSA we will be discussing how to improve collaboration and reuse with design manager, as well as how to accelerate spring and hibernate development. In RAD we will be looking at the development support for the new Liberty profile, and how that will dramatically reduce development times for Websphere Application Server development, as well as the new Rich Page Editor for simplifying and accelerating the development of Web2.0 applications. The

So what do you get when you cross SOA with Telecommunications? No joke: you get a new standard called TelcoML! As with most designs, it is standardization that propels the segment into the mainstream popularity - this is true in both the physical world (train track dimensions, electric voltage standards) as well as the software realm (digital video, http/html, and UML itself).
Join this webcast to learn more about TelcoML, a customization of the SOA Modeling Language (SoaML), for the telecom domain. As you may know, SoaML is Service Oriented Architecture (SOA) modeled in UML. The goal of TelcoML is to provide a blueprint for interfacing and defining services for the telecom industry. This includes services for telecom devices such as wireless and land line terminals, as well as services within the IT systems and Network side of the Communications Service Providers (CSPs). A specialization of SOA for domain specific application, TelcoML components are either defined or required for definition by the user. Service interfaces include, security, transactions related to security, system integrity such as recovery from errors, and interfaces needed to be defined by the user. As such, TelcoML is a SOA based superset of the OneAPI commonly used in the wireless industry and has been standardized by the Object Management Group (OMG) in 2011. The
Good Design is Good Business community is excited to host Irv Badr, Worldwide Go-to-Market Manager: Energy, Utilities and Communications Industries at IBM Rational. Good Design is Good Business would like to announce the upcoming session, "Model Behavior", a preview of an actual session to be delivered at the Innovate 2012 Conference! While "Model Behavior" can be interpreted as "ideal behavior", modeling itself is a good proactive approach to lowering costs in your organization by improving productivity with visual communication. It is often said, "a picture is worth a thousand words", and applying this tenet to modeling, results in more optimized communication and time savings for organizations that do not communicate or only communicate via text or email.
Please join us for this preview, Thursday, May 3, 2012, 12pm ET (noon ET), 9AM PT to see how one client achieves real results through their modeling efforts using Rational Software Architect's "sketching" capability (new in the version 8 releases).
Speaker: Aaron "Rusty" Lloyd, Solutions Engineer Executive Advisor, Office of the CTO, Wellpoint Inc. Host: Roger Snook, IBM Rational

Rational Software Architect (RSA) is one of the most popular design and
development platforms on the market today. If you are designing and
developing SOA solutions, the "Ready for Rational" SOAD Model Accelerator builds upon RSA's value with even more productivity.

The SOAD Model Accelerator guides the practitioner to create
best-practice based (Rational SOMA and SoaML) SOA Solutions, reduce
mechanical steps, enhance solution focus and magnify creativity and
problem solving skills. The components of the SOAD Model Accelerators
are focused in 4 areas:
-
Business Modeling
-
Service Identification
-
Service Specification
-
SOA Governance
