The IBM Redbooks team has written two volumes about “Using zEnterprise for Smart Analytics” to give you a complete and detailed overview. Volume 1 introduces the assessment process of the requirements of a new IBM Smarter Analytics workload. The focus on IBM methodologies brings a deep and structured insight in this preparation of an implementation. The second volume focuses on the implementation of the results from the assessment. It contains a step by step guide on how to place all the components and how you can evaluate your implementation.
3. Banking and IT infrastructure specialists have worked together to develop this showcase
For this Redbook publication, IBM has simulated a real bank. IBM Smarter Banking has been developed by a team of banking and IT infrastructure specialists working in the Banking Center of Excellence at the IBM Montpellier location in France. The banking systems that are used in the showcase run a mixed workload of real-world financial transactions, including cash withdrawals, deposits, mortgages, and car loans. The COBOL core banking component runs on IBM CICS and stores customer and account records in DB2 for z/OS. The initial focus of the showcase team was to create a multi-channel core banking environment capable of running a representative banking workload. As the showcase has evolved, they adopted an approach based on service-oriented architecture (SOA) for reusing the core banking system. They also developed a comprehensive monitoring solution to provide a real-time status of the health of the IT infrastructure.

A major advantage of using zEnterprise for Smart Analytics is that you can analyze your environment and your needs in an organized step-by-step fashion to ensure that you are choosing the hardware and software that best fit the purpose of your application system. This is known as "Fit for Purpose". After you have analyzed your zEnterprise workloads and prioritized your solution architecture alternatives, you will have collected the sizing and capacity planning information that you will need, the total cost of ownership, and the resulting value of the application for the business.

On the one hand, System z is traditionally the cornerstone for high-volume, batch- oriented transaction processing. On the other hand, analytics often involves variable processing demands and the use of graphical business user tools to support a variety of reporting needs. This combination provided a few conflicts when we considered only the z/OS or z/Linux environments. However, with the introduction of the zBladeCenter Extension (zBX) that supports blades and operating systems such as AIX, Linux, and Windows, analytical processing can exploit a rich set of capabilities within a closely-coupled runtime environment. The key benefits of deploying the analytics products and a business package onto this environment include a common data store for all products as well as access to warehouse tables within a scalable database environment, DB2 10 for z/OS. These brings a performance benefit, as does as the high performance network connectivity services that are available. Another benefit of this combination is that you can use enterprise-wide components to monitor the entire environment, view warnings about both hardware and software issues, and implement automated responses to rapidly resolve these issues before they impact the business.
