Today’s environment presents many significant challenges for city leaders. It’s mind boggling the vast amounts of data (both structured and unstructured) that exist within cities. Lack of visibility inhibits the delivery of an optimal response which can increase budgets, create redundant resource requirements, and lengthen the time to resolution.
IBM® Intelligent Operations Center provides an executive dashboard to help city leaders gain insight into various aspects of city management. It is an integrated and proven solution used by hundreds of cities around the world. IBM Intelligent Operations Center is a continually evolving platform and set of capabilities. As cities need to respond to the new issues of an ever changing world, IBM Intelligent Operations Center capabilities increase over time, the platform grows, and new features, interfaces, and integration points are introduced in each release.
IBM Intelligent Operations Center V1.6 introduced many new capabilities and enhancements. As an IBM Redbooks project leader, I led the development of the IBM Redbooks publications IBM
Bringing data into the solution is a critical process. Data imported from multiple sources such as sensors, 911 calls, licenses permits, and more becomes the heart of the solution. Enhancements in this area include support for new types of data sources, ease of configuration, and speed of process.
There are now four sources of data that can be used to import data into IBM Intelligent Operations Center:
The Data Sources configuration tool guides you step-by-step through the process of describing the data source:
The following tutorials demonstrate how to configure IBM Intelligent Operations Center data sources:

The time that it takes to import the data into the IBM Intelligent Operations Center solution has been improved by several orders of magnitude.
New configuration tools are now available that business users with domain expertise and no technical background can use out-of-the-box. Using these tools, business users can configure Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs), Key Performance Indicators (KPIs), Filter Panel for filtering data items displayed on the Map, Location Map, List, and Charts, create maps and more. The configuration tools can also be used by the technical community of consultants and IBM business partners for faster deployment of their solutions.
IBM Intelligent Operations Center 1.6 provides a new user experience (not just a new user interface) that was re-designed from ground up. The result is a new user interface that provides more information than in the previous release but simplified for ease of use. The new UI features a prominent geospatial layout and a filter panel allowing easy querying, reporting, and filtering of available data. The new UI is not about simply pushing information to the user who is a recipient of data updates and changes, acting as a mere observer. The user interface now allows an active interpretation of the available data. Users can now determine what they want to see and they can describe the characteristics and boundaries of the data they want to view.
IBM Intelligent Operations Center 1.6 includes new mobility features to ensure that city officials and operators don't need to be in a specific physical location to understand what's happening in their environment and respond to it quickly.
IBM Intelligent Operations Center 1.6 now supports HA (high availability) deployment for both, on-premises and cloud (SaaS) deployments. The high availability edition adds redundancy and improves scalability.
IBM Intelligent Operations Center includes an application-based programming model that supports all the interactions with the solution components. The programming model is based on industry standards REST and JAVA technologies. IBM Intelligent Operations Center includes a full set of REST and Java APIs providing a simplified development environment and making the platform easy to extend and customize for a large community of developers.
As I said at the beginning, it is almost impossible to summarize all the enhancements to IBM Intelligent Operations Center in V1.6 in just five bullets. The focus of this release is on:
