After long years of internal disks placed in enclosures, connected via the HSL or 12X loop, more and more options to connect external storage from a SAN have become available to IBM i customers. Here are 5 things to know about what the available options are and how they can help you to improve system availability and grow with your business:
1. Split apart the investment cycles for each component
Connect the storage via the standard fibre channel protocol to your IBM Power System to be able to split apart the investment cycle for storage and power. Exchange or upgrade every component independently from each other as your business grows and you are facing new challenges.
2. Wide range of attachment options
All IBM external SAN storage products can be attached either direct to the IBM Power System with IBM i, or behind the IBM SAN Volume Controller, or through the Virtual I/O Server. Visit the IBM
3. Flexible provisioning
Split external storage into logical disks as appropriate for your IBM i partition. Disk size and the amount of disks assigned to a single IBM i partition can be chosen with few limitations. Add new logical disks on the fly as your business grows.
4. Full integration with IBM PowerHA
Improve your system availability with IBM PowerHA. Switch an iASP between two or more systems in case of a disaster, or integrate FlashCopy for backup, without downtime to the production system, IBM PowerHA manages the communication between IBM i and the external storage.
5. Live Partition Mobility
Use Live Partition Mobility to move your IBM i partition from one IBM Power System to another IBM Power System for planned maintenance or system migration. Live Partition Mobility creates a new partition profile on the secondary system and switches the connections between the external storage and the IBM Power Systems. Live Partition Mobility is dependant on a fully virtualized environment, utilizing the Virtual I/O Server.
