Digital technologies and increasing demands on resources are continuing to disrupt IT environments and changing how IT teams must operate. To manage this disruptive environment, IT organizations must work smarter and employ tools and services that make it easier to manage their IT assets, improving support for their IT personnel.
IBM® Service Management Suite for z/OS® (SMSz) offers a single point of control for systems management functions, such as visibility into all aspects of their overall IBM z/OS environment, the ability to identify and recommend actions to resolve events taking place, and automation system elements spanning both hardware and software resources. SMSz covers both the hardware and software enterprise resources in an IBM z Systems environment. It improves the integration, ease of use, and collaboration across your IT team.
What does SMSz cover?
SMSz offers a simplified management solution with an integrated, single point of control for a broad range of systems management functions. It provides network and systems management, automation, and asset management to address business agility on IBM z Systems platforms.
The SMSz management tools execute in the z/OS environment along with the business critical workloads and includes these components:
Performance monitoring with IBM Tivoli OMEGAMON XE family of products
Automation with IBM Tivoli System Automation for z/OS and IBM Tivoli® NetView® for z/OS
Discovery with IBM Tivoli Asset Discovery for z/OS
What does SMSz automate?
The SMSz approach to automation includes automating systems and applications startup, shutdown, recovery, response to problems, and disaster recovery, improving system availability and reducing costs. It leverages extensive monitoring capabilities to provide both real-time and historical performance and network management capabilities for your z/OS operating systems, networks, storage subsystems, IBM DB2®, IBM CICS®, IBM IMS™, IBM WebSphere® MQ for z/OS, and IBM WebSphere Application Server for z/OS.
Who in IT does SMSz support?
SMSz supports the various roles and capabilities of IT personnel. The following figure shows the needs the various roles SMSz supports with tools and capabilities.
For example, the subject matter experts (SMEs) often require all relevant data and full access to the z/OS platform to perform critical in-depth analysis. SMSz provides the level of information the SMEs need. Operators are alert-driven and want assistance in problem resolution in order to identify when to ask for help or how to fix problems. SMSz goes further by providing operators (with less experience) a more intuitive interface that allows them to work at a higher skill level and resolve issues quickly.
How do the IT roles interact with SMSz?
SMSz has a new user interface, provided by IBM Service Management Unite. The Service Management Suite for z/OS architecture is extremely flexible and can support multiple user interfaces in a single data collection point on the z/OS platform. It tightly integrates existing service management tools to help z/OS platform operators work at a higher level, while requiring less training. Now users can interact with the system using consolidated views minimizing the need to search through various screens or to connect to multiple systems. These consolidated views provide both monitoring and automation support to users. An additional benefit is this approach increases collaboration across teams enabling them to work together regardless of their physical location or expertise level.
What does Service Management Unite bring?
The Service Management Unite user interface connects into your existing environment and provides problem solving logic that helps the z/OS operations team identify, isolate, and resolve problems quickly. This interface allows operators to work at a higher level by leveraging data from performance monitoring, automation, network, and analytics management tools for various management domains. It includes consolidated views for users to work with and resolve problems swiftly. The System Management Unite management solution integrates with tools you have installed in the IT environment. This approach establishes a common look and feel framework.
