Three weeks ago, we announced our 3Q2014 Early Access and Beta program for IBM SmartCloud Analytics - Log Analysis for z/OS. Yesterday, we published our first Beta driver for this new program. The most exciting capability in this Beta driver is certainly the new Linux on System z run-time support for the IBM SmartCloud Analytics - Log Analysis server. With this new capability, we have created the first solution to perform z/OS (and distributed) IT log analytics from System z. Other new capabilities included in this Beta driver: *... [More]
IBM Tivoli System z Experts set the record straight on common myths about system z monitoring, service availability and performance management There’s a lot of misleading information out there, thanks to repeated rumors, studies that get disproved and false advertising claims. Below, we set the record straight on common myths. Myth: #199 - 'Now that I have IBM zAware, I no longer need my OMEGAMON performance monitors and NetView automation' Fact: Not True: Actually it’s just the opposite. Using traditional monitoring and automation... [More]
The WebSphere MQ Monitoring Agent is available in IBM Tivoli OMEGAMON XE for Messaging for z/OS, and for distributed platforms in ITCAM for Applications. This agent provides a large number of attribute groups for your convenience in monitoring IBM MQ. However, only a few of the attribute groups are recommended to be enabled for historical collection in order to achieve reductions in agent historical processing, duplication of data, and historical space requirements. Out of the box, attribute groups MQ Action Log and MQ Event Archive... [More]
Tivoli Workload Scheduler for z/OS uses an agent named IBM Tivoli Monitoring Agent for Tivoli Workload Scheduler for z/OS to send events and alerts to IBM Tivoli Monitoring (ITM). Tivoli Workload Scheduler for z/OS establishes an IP connection with the Socket Data Source of the Tivoli Monitoring agent which acts like a listener task. Every time one of the monitored operations changes its status, or an alert is issued, the related event is sent to the Tivoli Monitoring agent. The data sent by Tivoli Workload Scheduler for z/OS is... [More]

Hello Community, this entry describes a performance enhancement involving the current plan VSAM dataset LSR buffering to be used in case of big workloads. Apar PM12394 that implements the enhancement, is available all TWS for z/OS releases (8.3.0 and later). The use of parameters CPBPLIM and CPDTLIM in controller OPCOPTS can cause performance issues when storage fragmentation occurs due to big plans execution. CPBPLIM allows to choose which percentage of the available storage can be used to allocate the buffers, CPDTLIM allows to choose... [More]
Deadlocks and timeouts are unresolved contentions in DB2. These unresolved contentions might cause incomplete transactions and might degrade the overall performance of your system. It is important to monitor and resolve these contentions. Tivoli OMEGAMON XE for DB2 Performance Expert on z/OS (OMPE) is invaluable in detecting and analyzing DB2 for z/OS deadlocks and timeouts. The following link takes you to some of IBM's recommended best practices using OMPE to identify where these are occurring then what steps to take to resolve the... [More]
