Article Date: 01 Aug 2009 'Dear Rocky' answers your System z monitoring and performance tuning questions. Rocky McMahan, a Senior Software Performance Engineer in Tivoli R& D, offers valuable tips to help you get more out of your Tivoli monitoring software. Dear Rocky: There are different storage parameters in IBM Tivoli Management Services: Engine (ITMS:Engine) that are set for different products. There seems to be no real consistency between the various OMEGAMON products. Because we feel these values are important to performance,... [More]

This is as easy as "one two three" now with OMEGAMON XE on zOS V5.3. First from the LPAR overview screen in the Enhanced 3270UI pick your LPAR with MSU use high - in this example it is Z2 at 98% of MSU Capacity - put "M" in the selection for the 4HR Rolling Average MSU Statistics for Z2. The "M" shows us the MSU details for the LPAR Z2. Now Pick your 5 Minute time period of heavy MSU usage... [More]
I wanted to let you know about a free webcast coming up later this week that will be of interest to anyone faced with managing increasing complexity in your networks. Titled "Solving Application and Network Issues with OMEGAMON and NetView" and presented by Kirk Bean, Product Manager for NetView for z/OS, the webcast will explore some of the exciting enhancements available in NetView for z/OS V6.1, and illustrate the use of NetView and OMEGAMON with IBM's Integrated Service Management approach to provide additional value... Tivoli Omegamon XE on z/VM and Linux has just released IF4. The highlight of this IF is a new Central Processing Complex (CPC) Workspace. From this workspace you can see, at a glance, the overall CPU usage of all the processors in your complex. The usage is broken down by processor type (IFL, CP, ZiiP, ZaaP, etc). This will allow you to easily see if you have excess capacity in your CPC, or if you are maximizing all of your processor resources. IF4 can be downloaded from Fix Central, with the corresponding Performance Toolkit piece available... [More]
Hello Community, this entry describes a performance enhancement involving the current plan VSAM dataset LSR buffering to be used in case of big workloads. Apar PM12394 that implements the enhancement, is available all TWS for z/OS releases (8.3.0 and later). The use of parameters CPBPLIM and CPDTLIM in controller OPCOPTS can cause performance issues when storage fragmentation occurs due to big plans execution. CPBPLIM allows to choose which percentage of the available storage can be used to allocate the buffers, CPDTLIM allows to choose... [More]
PROactive Performance Analysis using OMEGAMON and IBM Application Performance Analyzer OMEGAMON customers who are looking for that "next level of detailed analysis" can obtain that information using IBM's Application Performance Analyzer (5655-Q09) or APA. While OMEGAMON looks at the execution environment from the system and subsystem level, APA looks at the resources consumed by an application at the application's execution level - the Address Space where the application is running. APA can identify which modules... [More]
This is John Arnesen with NetView and SA Level 2 support.
Have you even seen a message and wondered what it meant? Could not find any meaningful information in the manuals?? Wanted to know more about a command??? There are ways to find out more using the IBM Support Portal or Google. Did you know that IBM content is indexed in Google... The IBM Support Portal will limit searches to be Product Specific. If the IBM Support Portal is configured for NetView z/OS, all searches will be related to that product. For... [More]

Deadlocks and timeouts are unresolved contentions in DB2. These unresolved contentions might cause incomplete transactions and might degrade the overall performance of your system. It is important to monitor and resolve these contentions. Tivoli OMEGAMON XE for DB2 Performance Expert on z/OS (OMPE) is invaluable in detecting and analyzing DB2 for z/OS deadlocks and timeouts. The following link takes you to some of IBM's recommended best practices using OMPE to identify where these are occurring then what steps to take to resolve the... [More]
This affects any address spaces that execute PGM=KLV, namely: z/OS ITM TEMS, z/OS OMEGAMON TEMAs, and z/OS OMEGAMON CUAs Previously a TIME RESET command would need to be issued to each address space after the z/OS system local clock was changed. With APAR OA46343, the code will check every quarter of an hour for a change of more than two minutes, forward or backward, in the z/OS system local clock; if a change is detected, the ITM Engine clock is resynchronised with the z/OS system local time. Using... [More]
