What's new: The OMEGAMON Enhanced 3270 UI allows the definition of a Secondary HUB TEMS. If you wish to periodically monitor a HUB TEMS, in another data center for example, then defining a secondary HUB TEMS is one solution. Once a secondary HUB TEMS is defined switching between the primary and secondary HUB TEMS is easy using the switch command. The secondary HUB TEMS will also become the active HUB TEMS, if for example, the primary HUB... [More]

Splitting the Enterprise Master in NetView
If you’ve worked with recent releases of NetView for z/OS, you probably know that NetView can be a collection point for management data within a sysplex and across an enterprise. Within the sysplex, NetViews can forward discovery manager data pertaining to sysplex and networking configuration/activity to a data collection NetView known as a sysplex master NetView. They can also send this data to a NetView outside the sysplex known as an enterprise master NetView. This enterprise master NetView can collect data from... [More]

Mobile and the Mainframe - More than just ‘More workload’
Over the last few weeks I've had the pleasure of talking to many clients at IBM events, User Groups and 1-1 meetings about a range of topics affecting System z and the one that has provoked some of the most interesting debate has been the impact of Mobile. Nobody would dispute the fact that the increased use of mobile technology is having an impact on the Systems of Record that are critical to so many enterprises, but after talking to numerous clients over the last few weeks the question has come up over and over again: "Is this new... IBM Security zSecure support for brand-new RACF password security enhancements
On November 13, 2014 password security enhancements in RACF were made available for z/OS V1R12, V1R13, and V2R1. A service stream enhancement to zSecure 1.12, 1.13, 1.13.1, 2.1, and 2.1.1 was made available at the same time. Among other improvements, these updates allow a larger password space (additional special characters allowed) and a stronger encryption method (KDFAES). Background Password security is a function as much of user education (e.g., do not use the same password on a strongly protected work account as on your favorite personal... [More]

System Automation I/O Operations
Important announcement to all System Automation for z/OS I/O operations (IOOps) users: IBM System Automation for z/OS (SA z/OS) 3.5 is the last SA z/OS release, which includes I/O operations functionality. If you use IOOps to manage connectivity in your active I/O configurations, IBM recommends that you use other established I/O configuration management solutions instead. In order to keep IOOps functionality on an as-is-basis beyond the SA z/OS 3.5 release, you have to migrate to SA z/OS 3.5 some day. SA z/OS 3.5 includes an independent IOOps... [More]

Investigating tough problems with OMEGAMON XE for Mainframe Networks
Recently, I worked with an airline company to identify why a few transactions out of hundreds per second were failing. Many z/OS applications act as a TCP/IP server and accept connections from users or applications on other hosts and mobile devices. The application at this customer that is experiencing problems does accept connections from end users, but it also acts as a TCP/IP client to retrieve information from servers running on Linux. Some of the transactions between the z/OS application and Linux servers were failing. Here's a brief... [More]

Who is driving my LPAR 4HR Rolling Avg MSU Usage to the max?
This is as easy as "one two three" now with OMEGAMON XE on zOS V5.3. First from the LPAR overview screen in the Enhanced 3270UI pick your LPAR with MSU use high - in this example it is Z2 at 98% of MSU Capacity - put "M" in the selection for the 4HR Rolling Average MSU Statistics for Z2. The "M" shows us the MSU details for the LPAR Z2. Now Pick your 5 Minute time period of heavy MSU usage... [More]

Pro-active Automation can Improve Availability and Productivity
Pro-active automation using monitoring can resolve performance problems before they cause outages alert operators about monitor or automation exceptions Many shops only automate IPL, messages, and shutdown. Recovery is automated only for single resources without dependencies or with only basic parent/child dependencies Recovery or moves have to be done by operators which leads to higher effort and recovery time, often exceeding the time allowed in Service Level Agreements. With a high automation level , like you see to the left,... [More]
