Welcome to the System z Management Blog, where you can read the perspectives from System z experts. This Blog provides insights into the System z solution, as well as technical details about specific IBM products.
Recently there was a change to the Utilized Storage Size data attribute and how it's calculated and displayed in OMEGAMON XE on z/OS, v5.1.0. In the Tivoli Enterprise Portal, the Coupling Facility Structures Data for Sysplex workspace, presents information for each coupling facility structure throughout the sysplex. The OMEGAMON enhanced 3270 user interface provides the Statistics for CF Cache Structure (KM5CFSO4) panel. Both displays use the CF Structures attribute group, which monitors the request activity from a z/OS image to a coupling... [More]
APAR PM66403 introduces support into Tivoli Decision Support for z/OS (TDSz) for the IBM DB2 Analytics Accelerator (IDAA) v2 and above. IDAA statistics data are collected from the SMF type 100 subtype 1 record, and IDAA accounting data is collected from the SMF type 101 record. This APAR provides new record definitions, tables, updates and reports into the DB2 component (Accounting and Response Time Statistics subcomponent) to collect and report on IDAA data from within TDSz. The following new objects are provided with this APAR: 1. Tables Two... [More]
With OMEGAMON XE for zOS the KM5_CPU_Loop_Warn Situation allows alerting of possible cpu looping address spaces on an LPAR. This unique function allows you to find these jobs before they use lots of your valuable CPU processor time. I have seen from our default settings of this situation to many false positive results while monitoring our LPARs. What I have done to reduce greatly these false positives is to change the formula by editing the situation. I have changed the warning limit from 95% to 98%. ... [More]
Integration between IBM Security zSecure Alert and QRadar SIEM 7 has become generally available on December 19, 2012. This integration allows forwarding real-time alerts from zSecure Alert to QRadar SIEM through the syslog protocol. zSecure Alert zSecure Alert is the real-time monitor component of the zSecure suite. It can correlate events and send out real-time alerts through e-mail, text message, Write To Operator console messages, SNMP traps, or syslog receiver events. It also integrates capabilities for data analysis and enrichment that... [More]
Here is an issue I ran into today. Lets look at the pdf file attached: Process Gone WIld PDF On Page 2 - I saw two alerts this AM - One for a possible CPU Looping address space on LPAR SYS and a second one for a USS Process using a large amount of CPU time. Lets look at these issues on LPAR SYS. On Page 3 - We go to OMEGAMON XE for zOS and look at LPAR SYS and ask which Address Space maybe Looping? It is CTG90GP. Now I can cancel this right here but I really want to understand it better... [More]

In the attached PDF we show how OMEGAMON XE for zOS 5.1.0 can prevent a z/OS LPAR from doom by warning the USS Processes pool is close to full. On slide 2 the e3270ui Situation Event Console workspace alerts me that the SP14 USS Process pool is over 90% full. If it gets to 100% the LPAR is in trouble and may not be able to continue to process work. On slide 3 you can see that I then went over to look at USS Processes in use of SP14. Who is using most of the 282 processes out of the max of 300? On slide 4 we see that... [More]

NetView for z/OS v6.1 Sample REXX programs can be downloaded to help you speed up zOS problem determination. The samples can be used to help you find different system messages captured in the NetView Consolidated Audit, Network and zOS log (Canzlog) that match on
various filter specifications available to NetView users. Click here to download a zip containing the three REXX files along with a readme in pdf form describing their capabilities. Click here to access the NetView Wiki for additional information.
NetView for z/OS REXX samples are available for integrating NetView with the zAware Server. These samples help identify when system anomalies are found by zAware and allow further automation and problem diagnosis using NetView functions. Further information about this integration, the samples for downloading and information about zAware itself can be found by clicking here for the NetView for z/OS Wiki Integration Scenarios page.
Hello, This is John Arnesen with System Automation level 2 support. Apar OA39553/UA66231 for NetView v6r1 and OA38891/UA65375 for NetView v5r4 are available and marked HIPER. If you have System Automation or GDPS running on one of these NetView platforms, you will want to apply these apars. The apars fix a problem where a HANG can occur anytime a PIPE CORRWAIT is issued. We have seen NetView take a ABEND0C8 in DSIMQMAN as one symptom for this problem. Please note there are 43 modules in this apar, so there are potential issues with the HANG... [More]

Also, please note that the apars will also impact System Automation and GDPS as they both have... [More]
Hello, This is John Arnesen with NetView for z/OS level 2 support. November's Blog entry is about NetView v6r1 and figuring out why there is no data showing in the TEP. Here is a link for a Technote that provides a general checklist to debug NetView TEMA problems with. http://www-01.ibm.com/support/docview.wss?uid=swg21614118 The Technote explains how to use NetView commands NACTL LISTCONN and NACTL LISTINFO to check connections and collectors as well as important messages to look for. The Technote also shows what to check in the Agent... [More]
