Welcome to the System z Management Blog, where you can read the perspectives from System z experts. This Blog provides insights into the System z solution, as well as technical details about specific IBM products.
Recently, I worked with an airline company to identify why a few transactions out of hundreds per second were failing. Many z/OS applications act as a TCP/IP server and accept connections from users or applications on other hosts and mobile devices. The application at this customer that is experiencing problems does accept connections from end users, but it also acts as a TCP/IP client to retrieve information from servers running on Linux. Some of the transactions between the z/OS application and Linux servers were failing. Here's a brief... [More]
This is as easy as "one two three" now with OMEGAMON XE on zOS V5.3. First from the LPAR overview screen in the Enhanced 3270UI pick your LPAR with MSU use high - in this example it is Z2 at 98% of MSU Capacity - put "M" in the selection for the 4HR Rolling Average MSU Statistics for Z2. The "M" shows us the MSU details for the LPAR Z2. Now Pick your 5 Minute time period of heavy MSU usage... [More]
Pro-active automation using monitoring can resolve performance problems before they cause outages alert operators about monitor or automation exceptions Many shops only automate IPL, messages, and shutdown. Recovery is automated only for single resources without dependencies or with only basic parent/child dependencies Recovery or moves have to be done by operators which leads to higher effort and recovery time, often exceeding the time allowed in Service Level Agreements. With a high automation level , like you see to the left,... [More]
In a recent blog, it’s been stated that IBM Tivoli Workload Scheduler for z/OS (TWSz) v9.2 version enhances operation efficiency with self-service catalogs and mobile connection (see here ). Do you want to read about our clients’ opinions supporting this statement? In this post, I will report our clients’ quotes and will comment on some of the advantages that “mobilizing” Workload Automation provides. "Mobile access is crucial for our organization to be competitive on the market. It accommodates business... [More]
The new release of OMEGAMON XE for Messaging v7.3.0 has an Enhanced 3270 User Interface feature that allows you to issue any MQSC display or ping command directly from the command line in most MQ workspaces. You no longer have to switch out of the Enhanced 3270UI when you want to issue an MQSC display command just because you want to see the data in that familiar way. IBM MQ has about 45 display and ping commands, which provide a wealth of information about your queue manager and its objects. For example, you want to see the results... [More]
The Third in a Series : OMEGAMON XE for DB2 Performance Expert on z/OS development plans to demonstrate, discuss, and solicit feedback on the next set of features and functions in development for the upcoming release. Mark your calendars for November 13, 2014 at 10:00AM Eastern where the development team will focus on: Proposed improvements to OMEGAMON DB2's enhanced 3270 UI system health indicators Updates to IBM DB2 Analytics Accelerator monitoring support in the enhanced 3270 UI We look forward to seeing you there.... A system programmer received a call that one of the applications on a transaction server is having some problem. The system programmer logs on to a data analyzer, quickly glances at the analyzed reports, understands what might be going wrong and fixes it. This seems to be a first reaction when a customer notices an issue in their workshop. There seems to be an exponential growth in the data generated worldwide. About 90% of data was generated in the last two years alone. It is also significant to know that 70% of the unstructured data in... [More]
zAware is a helpful tool from IBM's System Technology Group which can let you know when applications in your z/OS environment are doing unusual things. It monitors your system log for messages that are, for you, statistically unusual. zAware's browser session can show you when unusual message traffic is brewing by presenting what it calls it's "anomaly score". For you to know about it, though, you have to either logon to zAware's browser interface and keep your eyes peeled or better yet let OMEGAMON... [More]
Hello, This is John Arnesen with NetView and System Automation for z/OS level 2 support. Have you ever wanted to search all the manuals for a product release level at once, or were familiar with using BookManager to search for information in all the manuals and have found out the new product versions are in PDF format??? How do I search the PDF manuals like I did in BookManager??? Check out the IBM Knowledge Center and you will find a quick and easy way to search all the manuals for one or more products and versions. Get started with this URL... [More]
The GDPS Active/Active Continuous Availability solution is designed to provide a comprehensive continuous availability and business continuity solution to support two or more data center sites separated by unlimited distance to help you achieve recovery point objective (RPO) and recover time objective (RTO) goals. GDPS Active/Active Continuous Availability solution supports the Active/Standby and Active/Query configurations. The Active/Standby (update) configuration enables you to receive transactions in one site and copy changed data, using... [More]
Are you installing IBM®’s OMEGAMON monitoring solutions at your site for the first time? Are you using the PARMGEN configuration tool for the first time? Are you performing a quick on-premise proof of concept deployment? If none of these items describes you, then you are an experienced user of the monitoring products and the PARMGEN tool and you are welcome to go directly to the documented quick configuration scenarios published in IBM Knowledge Center OMEGAMON XE shared documentation , after... Tivoli Workload Scheduler for z/OS uses an agent named IBM Tivoli Monitoring Agent for Tivoli Workload Scheduler for z/OS to send events and alerts to IBM Tivoli Monitoring (ITM). Tivoli Workload Scheduler for z/OS establishes an IP connection with the Socket Data Source of the Tivoli Monitoring agent which acts like a listener task. Every time one of the monitored operations changes its status, or an alert is issued, the related event is sent to the Tivoli Monitoring agent. The data sent by Tivoli Workload Scheduler for z/OS is... [More]
SA for z/OS is built on top of many base services provided by NetView for z/OS. But did you know that the two products also have a long history of collaboration and integration? Or that several integration points are new to the last couple releases? Let's explore these areas. First, "data REXX" support gave NetView the opportunity to conditionally include SA initialization members without asking customers to manually include these members, as they previously had to do, saving time and eliminating potential errors. This has been... [More]
We have shipped PTF UA70726 (V7.5) and UA71035 (V8.1) to overcome the high water mark limitation for INTEGER data type found in 3 columns of 3 tables in the database repository. The maximum allowable value for INTEGER data type is 2147483647. These 3 columns are now defined as FLOAT data types in order to support values greater than 2147483647 .
In a previous blog entry, “You can get there from here”, the new OMEGAMON XE on z/OS version 5.3.0 Near Term History support was introduced. The navigation paths between all supported workspaces were explained. The scenario used in this blog entry focuses on one of those areas of navigation. It explains how to determine the reason for an address space experiencing delays, and the address space or spaces causing them, during a specific historical timeframe. Why was my job delayed Jason? Jason, in systems programming, received a... [More]
