"SAP is at the center of today’s technology revolution. The market leader in enterprise application software, SAP helps organizations fight the damaging effects of complexity, generate new opportunities for innovation and growth, and stay ahead of the competition." (http://go.sap.com/about.html).
In the SAP environment, the Extended Insight feature of OMEGAMON® DB2® recognizes transactions coming from an SAP application server automatically and groups them into Workload Groups customized for SAP. (In the non-SAP environment, Extended Insight provides end-to-end database performance monitoring for any Java™ and CLI database application using DRDA® to connect to DB2 z/OS®, providing the ability to quickly understand where your database applications are spending their time.)
While the monitoring of SAP business transactions thru SAP's DBA Cockpit is very granular, it lacks visibility on the response time breakdown of the reported "db time" which is composed of driver, network and database time itself. This is exactly where the Extended Insight feature adds complementary value to the existing SAP Cockpit implementation, allowing for a much better and faster problem determination and resolution.
Furthermore the metrics displayed in the Extended Insight Analysis Dashboard show delta-processed statement cache metrics that can be observed using a history slider bar and as such represent a key difference from a data value perspective to the Cockpit statement cache views, which are based on aggregated statement cache information. Using delta-processed metrics in the Extended Insight Analysis Dashboard enables quicker identification of spikes in metrics like DB2 CPU time, consumption of a SQL statement, or sudden increases in number of logical page I/O (getPages).
A recently released developerWorks® article (Configure and monitor SAP applications with the OMEGAMON DB2 Performance Expert Extended Insight feature) written by Matthias Tschaffler from the OMEGAMON DB2 team, in close relation with Heike Schmidt and Harald Duvenbeck from the IBM SAP team in Böblingen, Germany describes in great detail how the Extended Insight deployment can be done in SAP environments using the ABAP stack on DB2 z/OS. The article not only covers the installation part on both the Repository Server and SAP application server side, but also focuses on the SAP specifics when installing the client software on an SAP application Server. Besides the deployment considerations, common pitfalls and troubleshooting hints and tips are provided to help make the installation of the end-to-end SQL monitoring feature easily understood.
The close working relationship with SAP on this functionality and the positioning of the Extended Insight feature in SAP shops led to the inclusion of the Extended Insight feature as part of the SAP reference architecture for SAP Banking and SAP Insurance.
