The PARMGEN configuration tool supports a number of components in the following product suites:
Tivoli OMEGAMON Performance Management Suite for z/OS
Tivoli OMEGAMON for z/OS Management Suite
IBM Service Management Suite for z/OS
Tivoli Advanced Storage Management Suite for z/OS
Effective preparation and planning make configuration, deployment and upgrades of the product suites go more quickly and smoothly.
Here are some of the best practice tips to aid in a smooth deployment of the products. We realize many customers also employ their own best practices and rollout procedures catered to their site conventions, so the recommendations noted in this blog are aimed to supplement your current best practices, for your consideration:
Getting started: Getting an overview of the entire process, gathering certain information, and accomplishing certain tasks even before you acquire and install your software can make your deployment go much more quickly and smoothly.
To prepare for ordering and installation: Ordered product packages can be installed via IBM CBPDO or ServerPac Offerings.
Tip: Check the PSP and Upgrade information in the Recommended Maintenance Service Levels for Tivoli OMEGAMON XE and Tivoli Advanced Reporting products on ITM V6.x technote for recommended maintenance (URL: http://www.ibm.com/support/docview.wss?uid=swg21290883). This technote provides a list of PTFs not yet included on the current RSUyymm, and it also contains important links to the latest ITM fixpacks.
Note: The OMEGAMON XE V5.3.0 family of products requires ITM6.3.0 FP2 -- it is recommended to install the latest GA ITM6.3.0 FP3 (or higher maintenance).
ITM6.3.0 FP4 z/OS maintenance (under TMS infrastructure FMIDs HKDS630/HKLV630) is now available in RSU1501 and higher levels.
ITM6.3.0 FP3 z/OS maintenance (under TMS infrastructure FMIDs HKDS630/HKLV630) is now available in RSU1409 and higher levels.
PARMGEN Interim Feature (IF) which introduces the new Quick Configuration mode, is recommended @ 3Q14B (FMID HKCI310 PTF UA73689) and is now available in RSU1410 and higher levels. The new PARMGEN Quick Configuration mode not only caters to our important PARMGEN and OMEGAMON first-time-users (FTU), but it also benefits our important existing PARMGEN users who are either reconfiguring existing RTEs @ the current product versions (not being upgraded) or upgrading an existing RTE. PARMGEN PTF UA73689 also supports all the GA and GA-1 versions of the products packaged in our product suites, for PARMGEN-deployed components. PARMGEN IF @ 1Q15 (FMID HKCI310 PTF UA76016) and is now available in PUT1503.
Tip: If you are creating a new SMP/E environment for a staged upgrade of new or existing runtime environments (RTEs), you can install the new product and component versions into a new SMP/E environment and then configure new or existing LPAR RTEs that contain the new versions. You can order and install a Tivoli ServerPac that contains the latest version of the Tivoli® Management Services on z/OS® components and of any OMEGAMON® XE products you want to upgrade. Make sure that the ServerPac contains all the products originally installed in the CSI and configured in the RTE, even the products that are in their current GA versions, to ensure that the Tivoli Enterprise Monitoring Server (TEMS) and the enhanced 3270 User Interface are able to continue monitoring the z/OS Agents.
To prepare for upgrade: Review the requirements and other information in the upgrade section. Are you using Self Describing Agent (SDA) feature to upgrade (i.e., is SDA enabled)?
Tip: If SDA is enabled, the upgrade processing can start with any Remote-TEMS-based LPAR RTEs on z/OS.
Note: If SDA feature is not enabled, upgrade processing must start with the Hub TEMS environment. If you are using certain components in the package that are not currently SDA-enabled, for planning considerations, application support for these components must also be installed using the typical application support DVD procedure (See Planning an upgrade: SDA sub-topic for more information).
To prepare for PARMGEN configuration:
Tip: Review New to PARMGEN? Hit the ground running with the First-time-user (FTU) deployment guide blog. The key IBM Knowledge Center OMEGAMON XE shared publications topics are Configuring and Scenarios and How-tos.
Scenarios and how-tos topics for specific implementation, maintenance/upgrade or deployment scenarios that match your needs
Planning and Configuring topics for general planning and new Quick Configuration mode (recommended) and Standard Configuration mode navigation flow
Common parameters topics for definitions of common parameters / Agent-specific parameter reference guides for parameters used by a single agent
Tip: When customizing the configuration profiles, check out the new on-line PARMGEN PF Key macros for F1=HELP (place your cursor on the product parameter and press F1 to display on-line parameter help), F15=HIDECMNT (hide profile comments macro), and F16=CLNESECT (clone section macro to clone product table parameters when replicating DB2 subsystem parameters for example)
Master PARMGEN Technote for late-breaking news, latest PARMGEN presentation materials, latest PARMGEN customer open Q&A webcast schedules, and latest Enablement Support sections for GA PARMGEN PTFs and upcoming enhancement APARs (and planned contents) for purposes of IBM MyNotifications subscription.
Tip: If you are converting/upgrading from an ICAT RTE to PARMGEN mode, check out the new QCF11 Implementation Scenario. Also, check out the QCF11 Lab Guide Scenario featured in the InterConnect 2015 PARMGEN Hands-on Lab Guide (Lab 5644) - based on PARMGEN 1Q15 IF design. The PARMGEN Lab Guide used at the InterConnect 2015 conference is now attached in the Master PARMGEN Technote. The third scenario simulates a real-world upgrade for an existing customer who has a mix of products. In the real world, perhaps not all of your products would be upgraded, but all in the RTE are converted to use PARMGEN where existing configuration values established in the legacy configuration tool, ICAT, are harvested and re-used in PARMGEN.
Tip: If you are interested in other types of RTEs to set-up in addition to what is highlighted in the new FTU deployment guide (featured Configuring a sharing-with-SMP/E runtime environment with a hub monitoring server QCF10 Implementation Scenario), check out additional pre-defined, new model RTEs to set-up as discussed in QCF01 - QCF09 Implementation Scenarios.
Tip: If you are an existing PARMGEN user and you are simply applying regular product maintenance (no FMID upgrades involved), and you are not currently exploiting new configuration features provided by PARMGEN 3Q14B IF (PTF UA73689), check out SMPE01 Maintenance Scenario. In addition, here are some very useful sample usage scenarios: (Source: "PARMGEN First-Time-User (FTU) Quick Config Mode Features in 3Q14 PTF UA73689 (Part n).zip" presentation materials attached in the "Details" section of the Master PARMGEN Technote)
