The following is a brief overview of the IBM® DB2® Analytics Accelerator for z/OS® monitoring capabilities with IBM Tivoli® OMEGAMON® XE for DB2 Performance Expert on z/OS – part of the IBM Tivoli Performance Management Suite for z/OS. One would think with queries purportedly running 2000x faster than without an accelerator, who would need to monitor its performance? But just as the first thing all of us techies do after upgrading anything that claims improved performance is to attempt to confirm the claims, businesses and CIOs need proof that their investment is well-spent and that its being exploited to its fullest capacity.
The first thing to be aware of is that the accelerator is completely managed by DB2 for z/OS (see above.) In addition to application transparency, this also means for the purposes of OMEGAMON that the accelerator monitoring interface is the same as the interface used for the vast majority of OMEGAMON-provided DB2 for z/OS performance metrics. New instrumentation has been added or existing instrumentation has been extended to support key metrics about the accelerator with respect to accelerator state and query execution.
OMEGAMON XE for DB2 Performance Expert Accounting (application execution) and Statistics (accelerator state and activity) reports reflect typically reduced time spent in DB2 for accelerated queries as well as information about things like accelerator queue length and messages sent and received respectively. Even prior to having or enabling tables on an accelerator, OMEGAMON can provide insight into potential elapsed, CPU, and Specialty Engine times improvements (Eligible times) were an accelerator to be acquired or tables moved to the accelerator.
OMEGAMON real-time monitoring screens provide execution time statistics and cumulative accelerator metrics at the press of the Enter key.
OMEGAMON monitoring support for the accelerator was introduced in 2009 when it was known as the IBM Smart Analytics Optimizer. Today, OMEGAMON supports up through the IBM DB2 Analytics Accelerator for z/OS Version 4 and when integrated with DB2 for z/OS tools like the IBM InfoSphere® Optim™ Query Workload Tuner for DB2 for z/OS and IBM DB2 Query Monitor, can help identify tables that are not currently accelerated as well as provide recommendations on how to change a query to enable it for acceleration.
Of course, OMEGAMON’s UTILITY Trace report allows system administrators to hone in on the unload performance from DB2 for z/OS into accelerator tables.
And lastly, with extensions to OMEGAMON’s Performance Database (PDB) to support the accelerator as well as the spreadsheet input data generator utility, flexible analysis like this workload throughput comparison chart confirms at least one possible outcome of accelerator investment.
