In recent years growth in both size and complexity of mainframe storage environments has created some issues with monitoring storage and space, forcing storage managers to trade off frequency and detail in data collection to simply be able to gather needed status and metrics. IBM OMEGAMON for Storage on z/OS v5.4.0 (available in November 2016) eliminated the constraints on Near Term History detail and collection frequency, and improved performance by over 20%, measured in internal tests. As a result, clients who had previously reported out-of-memory issues, now can capture all the data they need to keep without having to “tune and prune” their data to fit into the available space. In addition, new Realtime Dataset Metrics, which is being delivered in the service stream provides fresh, up-to-date critical information to Storage Managers allowing them to prevent space-related outages and identify issues as they are brewing. This critical data now takes only minutes to gather, and is kept incrementally updated for currency, making OMEGAMON for Storage the keystone tool for space management, outage prevention, and monitoring storage hardware and software subsystems.
