UPDATE: IBM OMEGAMON FOR JVM ON Z/OS V540 IS NOW GENERALLY AVAILABLE
Back in February, we announced the first release of OMEGAMON monitoring for Java Virtual Machines (JVM) on z/OS bringing the resource level monitoring seen within the rest of the OMEGAMON family of products to Java runtimes. The initial release provided the ability to auto-discover how Java is currently running on your LPAR, insights into Garbage Collection performance, thread and lock details, CPU utilization (including zIIP-offload levels) plus basic information about the JVM's runtime environment.
Today, we are pleased to announce the next iteration of our JVM monitoring agent - IBM OMEGAMON for JVM on z/OS V5.4.0 - which builds upon the previous version to provide deeper insight into Java performance on z/OS. The first area of new function is Native Memory. In addition to the Java heap, it is useful to understand how much of the address space's allocated memory is being consumed by the JVM and how. A new workspace provides these details enabling you to proactively track possible memory leaks and take preventative action before outages occur. Secondly, we have enhanced the Thread Details display to include CPU usage details per thread. Imagine the problems caused by a looping application running on Java-based server - with these new details you can pinpoint the running code that is causing the JVM to consume resources, notify the application owner and enable them to correct problems.
The third major update in this release is specifically focused on monitoring IBM z/OS Connect Enterprise Edition (z/OS Connect EE). Clients are seeing the benefit of leveraging their existing z/OS investments and infrastructure in a hybrid cloud deployment, enabling new applications to call z/OS-based systems of record (CICS, IMS, DB2, WAS) through APIs. z/OS Connect EE is a tool that enables management of these APIs as a gateway into your z/OS systems. As it runs on a Liberty server, you can manage resources using OMEGAMON for JVM as any other Java runtime, however we have also provided new specific capabilities that will capture z/OS Connect EE details such a services available, average response time per service and details into the currently slowest performing services giving you insight into performance problems before application owners (and end users) start to complain.
IBM OMEGAMON for JVM on z/OS is available as part of IBM Service Management Suite on z/OS, IBM Tivoli OMEGAMON Performance Management Suite for z/OS, and IBM Tivoli OMEGAMON for z/OS Management Suite. It is also available for the first time as a standalone product (PID: 5698-ABA) if you prefer. There are several other updates to the OMEGAMON family of products announced today, including IBM OMEGAMON for Storage V5.4.0 and IBM Tivoli OMEGAMON XE for DB2 Performance Expert on z/OS V5.4.0.
