It would be more correct to say that the password is hashed and not encrypted. This is an important difference (at least to those that have experience with cryptography). The first part indicates the hashing algorithm used (SHA-512 in your example), followed by the salt value and finally the hashed password.

Hi Friends, <div>&nbsp;</div> I have a doubt on this /etc/shadow file <div>&nbsp;</div> By default the /etc/shadow file has the below permissions. <div>&nbsp;</div> -r-------- 1 root root 1.5K 2012-08-07 01:56 /etc/shadow <div>&nbsp;</div> Then how the /etc/shadow file got updated while the normal user changing his password? <div>&nbsp;</div> Can anyone explain?
