You might have seen the announcements on IBM Watson IoT for Automotive Bluemix services' retirement since they are shifting to IBM Watson IoT for Automotive SaaS service. See the following links to blogs for more details of this strategic changes.
Then, you might wonder how it will change the IoT for Automotive starter applications. In fact, the differences are not that large. We have already released a version of the fleet management starter application that works with an IoT for Automotive SaaS service instance. Except for the asset management APIs, IoT for Automotive SaaS' APIs are a super set of those of the retiring Bluemix services. The fleet management starter application for IoT for Automotive SaaS has additionally introduced the functional extension using custom plugin code in Java.
Change needed for the car sharing starter application is similar although we have not released the car sharing application for IoT for Automotive SaaS version yet. Source code wise, the Bluemix version and the SaaS version are pretty compatible. We have tested the car sharing starter application published for the Bluemix services works fine with the SaaS service.
Previously, when the fleet management or the car sharing starter application is set up on Bluemix (and can be set up with one button click on the readme page), one or two IoT for Automotive Bluemix service instances are created and bound to the application. Instead, with the IoT for Automotive SaaS, you need to have an IoT for Automotive SaaS service instance beforehand and bind your starter application to the IoT for SaaS service instances with a few manual steps to switch the service end-point and set a credential. It is described in the readme page of the starter application.
At the time of writing this blog, there is no free trial version of IoT for Automotive SaaS. It is a dedicated SaaS environment for each user. You have to contact an IBM sales representative or visit this site to get your own instance of IoT for Automotive SaaS to try the starter applications. We have a plan of a public web site to demonstrate starter applications running with IoT for Automotive SaaS service.
