There are some powerful enhancements to systems engineering and to embedded software development available with the application of modeling. These include better design, improved requirements compliance, enhanced longevity of your designs, and decreased error rates. Since 60% of the cost of developing embedded systems is in the verification of those systems, wouldn’t it be nice if we could get the same benefits for testing as well? The UML Testing Profile defines a standard way of using models to develop and apply models to testing. While this standard is most commonly applied to model-driven development (MDD) and model-based systems engineering (MBSE), these benefits are available even when the design is not itself modeled. The UML Testing Profile allows the specification of test cases using sequence, state, activity, and other diagrams and specifies the semantic content of test architectures, test results and other critical artifacts. The Rhapsody Test Conductor tool is the only commercial implementation of this standard and provides a means of automatically applying the standard, including the automated generation of test architectures, application of test cases, determination of test verdicts, and computing the degree of test coverage. This talk with address the application of the UML Testing Profile to best achieve those results both “manually” and with the Test Conductor tool.
