IBM Enterprise COBOL for z/OS V6.1 is designed to unleash the full performance potential of z Systems processor architectures and continues to deliver the performance roadmap set forth in 2013. It fully supports z13 and z13s hardware. Well-structured, compute intensive batch applications running on z13 compiled with COBOL V6.1 have shown CPU time reduction of up to 5% over the same applications compiled with COBOL V5.2; up to 40% over the same applications compiled with COBOL V4.2. 1 With expanded capacity, COBOL V6.1 can now optimize very large COBOL programs, including those created by COBOL code generators.
The proliferation of mobile devices has spurred strong demand to modernize existing System of Record applications, extending them to support new mobile (i.e. System of Engagement) applications. COBOL V6.1 has new capability to generate JSON documents directly from COBOL applications. JSON is a lightweight data exchange format that will provide mobile applications easy access to data and the processing they need from System of Record applications written in COBOL.
Enterprise COBOL V6.1 continues to deliver new COBOL 2002 language features requested by clients. In an effort to help clients better plan their migration from older versions of COBOL compilers, COBOL v6.1 has enhanced invalid data reporting and out of bounds checks capabilities to help detect errors in existing COBOL source.
A trial version, Enterprise COBOL Developer Trial for z/OS V6.1, also ships today for clients to assess the real value that could be gained by their COBOL applications or help them plan the migration. It comes with a 90-day, zero-charge evaluation license and does not initiate single version charging (SVC).
