The problem that led to the red alert came from an incident at a single DB2 customer in the USA using the zDMF product to migrate DB2 datasets to different volumes while DB2 was up and running. It is mathematically possible to hit the problem when running DB2 without the use zDMF. However, the use of zDMF dramatically increases the likelihood of hitting this problem. IBM DB2 Development has no knowledge of any customer experiencing this particular problem outside of the one particular case and the subject customer hit the problem with zDMF running. As soon as zDMF processing was terminated, the problem did not surface again. The code in the fix is very simple and it is recommended that all customers put it on. The red alert has been issued based on impact and difficulty of diagnosis should a customer encounter the problem - it is not based on pervasiveness. The potential exposure only applies to DB2 10 for z/OS customers.
