Identifying free disk on VIO Servers

Presenting The Disk
You mapped a new disk to a pair of VIOS. The easiest way to find out the disks that aren’t mapped to any VIO client is to use the lspv command with the –free flag .
Here's how it’s done.
First, scan the disk using the cfgdev command. The cfgdev command will return to shell on completion.
Identifying Free Disk
After that, run the lspv with the –free flag. Note that the lspv –free flag is a VIOS Command Line Interface (CLI). So, the –free flag is not available to use on AIX LPAR or VIOS restricted shell.
And there you go! You are presented with all the disks that aren’t mapped to any VIO client.
The first column displays the device name, the second column displays the PVID (if any) and the third column displays the size of the disk.
Any Data on hdisk9?
Hang on! Why is there a PVID assigned to hdisk9? Does it have data on it? To verify if the disk has data on it, you can read my article on How to Verify Whether a Disk Contains Data. To do this on a VIO server, you will be required to switch to a restricted shell by running oem_setup_env command on your VIOS.
