Smarter Service Systems-Engineering Sustainable, Efficient and Interactive Complex Service Systems

The broad goals of this project are to provide engineering students with multiple exposures to what it means to have a sustainable and innovative mindset, geared toward smarter cities systems efficiency and optimization and to facilitate the development of both the passion and the skills to integrate industrial engineering and systems engineering tools and methods with best practices. The expected outcomes of this integration include improved understanding of science, technology, engineering and math (STEM) skills; an increase in social responsibility; improvement of leadership skills; development of innovative thinking and decision making skills; and a better understanding of smarter cities sustainability and services design issues (Ahram, Karwowski, Amaba, 2010a,b). The Smarter Service Systems course is critical and holds a key role in establishing the proper smarter cities skills needed for a smarter planet, while enhancing the ability of future engineering graduates to better contribute to smarter planet technology innovation while preserving natural resources and advancing technological and societal development.
