This course starts with describing the necessity of IT diffusion in healthcare and accentuates Health Information Exchange (HIE)as a facilitator for utilization and implementation of Health Information Technology (HIT. The course explores the technology requirements of information exchange emphasizing interoperability as a fundamental requirement for healthcare systems. It looks at the benefits of health information exchange from providers' and patients' perspectives. The standards for the implementation of HIE are examined, and privacy and security issues are discussed. Students are introduced to XML and Web services to learn about data transport and application programming interfaces. Finally, the business of managing HIE is addressed. In addition to a text book, the course uses a collection of published materials to complement book chapters for each lecture topic, and encourages students to conduct literature research to find more reading materials on each topic, hence, building a knowledge base for present and future use.
